A 10-game East Coast swing for the Los Angeles Dodgers saw them pick up five wins and five losses to move them to 56-44 and -9.58 units on the season. They'll hope to have as much success as their arch rivals from San Francisco did on Tuesday against the 44-56 Oakland Athletics.
ODDS ANALYSIS
The A's have been dismal, and the trade of Scott Kazmir to Houston signals the end for their run this year. Not only are they 12-games below .500, but they're also down 20.85 units for bettors.
Much of that is thanks in large part to a 21-29 home record, but Oakland has lost four games in a row on the road as well.
PITCHING MATCHUP
The argument could be made that Sonny Gray is the only reason to come see an A's game any longer this season. Gray is a phenomenal pitcher, and he deserves a lot better than this.
He does have 10 of Oakland's 44 wins, and his 2.30 ERA legitimately could put him in the discussion for the Cy Young Award before the season is said and done with.
Gray only has two starts all season long with more than four runs allowed.
The Dodgers are still in search of another starting pitcher to add to their rotation, and for good reason. Brett Anderson hurt his Achilles last week, but is expected to trot back out there for this start on Tuesday.
The vet has pitched well this year, going 5-5 with a 3.33 ERA, but any upgrade the Dodgers can get would help them dramatically.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"You say the 'Big Two', but Brett Anderson has been pitching good really pretty much every time out. So it's been a solid group of three. Bolsinger and Frias, other than not going real deep into games, have really, for the most part, pitched pretty good." – Dodgers manager Don Mattingly on his rotation aside from Clayton Kershaw and Zack Greinke
SITUATIONAL BETTING
Oakland is a mess at the back of its bullpen as well. Gray was great in his last game, only to watch Tyler Clippard blow it for him. Clippard is now just 17-of-21 in save chances, and that truthfully deserves a demotion to a lower-leverage situation.
PROP TALK
Remember when Yasiel Puig was the best thing since sliced bread in LA? He's batting .253 this year with just six home runs, and hasn't had a hit that wasn't a homer since July 19. The outfielder is in a 2-for-21 slump coming into this series and should be avoided at all costs.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The A's have given up this year, but Gray certainly hasn't. It's going to be tough to see him pitch the rest of this year with a Triple-A team surrounding him, especially knowing that anything less than a complete game is going to leave him sweating some bullets once the bullpen takes over.
That said, we're not all that convinced that Anderson is healthy at the moment, and if he shows any signs of being slowed down by that Achilles, this could be a bad game for the hosts.
