ODDS ANALYSIS
The Yankees had their seven-game winning streak snapped by the Nationals on Wednesday and could be faced with a bigger problem now that closer Andrew Miller is on the shelf with forearm tightness.
The season series has been close with the teams playing four one-run games among the seven total. New York is 4-3 against the O’s and won three of the four decided by a single run with Miller getting a save in all three games. The Orioles will be happy not to see him in late-inning situations. NY starter CC Sabathia has pitched a little better of late but still has a bloated ERA and the over is 3-1 in his last four starts.
The O’s are looking for revenge and to make a move on the Yanks at the top of the AL East after dropping three of four in Yankee Stadium in early May. They did win twice in a three-game home set with the Yanks but are down 1.04 units in the series.
PITCHING MATCHUP
CC Sabathia (3-7, 5.25 ERA) allowed back-to-back homers in the first inning then put up zeros over the final five frames of his outing to get the win over the Angels. He gave up just five hits with seven strikeouts in his first home win of the season and might have gone another inning after only 87 pitches, but he was tossed for arguing balls and strikes.
Sabathia was dealt a loss by the O’s on Apr. 14 giving up seven hits and four runs over seven innings. In 31 career starts against Baltimore he’s 18-7 with a 3.40 ERA.
Bud Norris (2-4, 8.63 ERA) held the Indians to one run over five innings in his return from the disabled list getting the win on Sunday. He scattered four hits with a pair of walks striking out seven on 85 pitches.
Norris started and took the loss against the Yanks in his last outing before going on the DL with bronchitis, giving up four runs on six hits in 3.1 innings on May 10. He’s 4-1 with a 4.02 ERA spanning 31.1 innings in six career starts versus New York.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“I pitch with fastball command and my slider is my second-best pitch. So early in the year I definitely was lacking in a couple things, but to have the month and to really kind of fine tune my mechanics and have [catcher Matt] Wieters and get all the feedback I’ve gotten the last couple rehab starts, I was just really excited to out there and complete.” – O’s pitcher Bud Norris after tossing five innings of one-run ball in his first start since coming off the DL.
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Yankees had a plan all season: Reach the eighth inning with a lead, turn to The Formula. Get those first 21 outs by whatever means necessary and final six are the easy part – three from Dellin Betances and three from Andrew Miller. The plan was perfect, Betances from the right side blowing away hitters with his 99 mph gas, and Miller, from the left side, throwing his own brand of gas along with an untouchable slider. Those six outs have been guarantees. They are automatic. Until they’re not. Closer Miller was placed on the disabled list Wednesday with a forearm strain and will not pickup a baseball for 10-14 days. He and Betances were not available for Wednesday’s game when the Yanks blew a late lead and lost in extras snapping their seven game win streak. Betances will move into the ninth-inning role and the other spots are up for grabs.
PROP TALK
Following a recent slump that took his batting average below .300 for the first time since the first week of the season, O’s center fielder Adam Jones has found his stroke and the opponents are paying. A three-game hitless skid took his average to .293 on June 2 however since then Jones has 11 hits in seven games with his average back over .300. Jones has hit CC Sabathia well with half of his 18 hits going for extra bases, including four home runs. With Jones back on a roll look for him to spark the O’s attack.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Yankees have been a streaky team all season and the good streak ended Wednesday with their run of seven straight wins coming to an end. They also lost their closer leaving the bullpen situation up in the air and they still haven’t hit the baseball that well. Somehow they’re holding onto first place in the AL East. But with a bad streak looming that might change and the O’s are poised to make a run. Baltimore got Matt Wieters back off the DL and if the O’s get their starters ironed out they’ll be in the hunt. Bud Norris is one of the starters the O’s need to start pitching like he did last season and he resumes his comeback off the DL.
