ODDS ANALYSIS

The Giants were ready to overtake the Dodgers for the top spot in the NL West but a five-game losing streak has them on their heels as they begin a six-game road trip. SF was swept at home by Pittsburgh, dropping the series finale 5-2 on Wednesday completing its homestand at 2-5 finishing down 4.48 units. San Francisco welcomes a road trip after its failures at home. The Giants have been better away from ATT Park, going 14-11 in the black 4.3 units and are 8-2 in their last 10 road contests.

A stretch of seven wins in eight games had folks thinking maybe the Phillies weren’t all that bad. Well, they are. The Phils had a dramatic 5-4 comeback, extra-inning win on Wednesday – their second straight over the Reds – following a seven-game losing streak and were down 5.32 units in that nine-game stretch. They played above the scoreline in both games with Cincinnati but the under is 15-10-2 at Citizens Bank Park.

PITCHING MATCHUP

SF’s Tim Lincecum (5-3, 3.00 ERA) allowed four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings Saturday in an 8-0 loss to the Braves, failing to go beyond the fifth inning for the third time in his last four turns. His ERA has gone up nearly a full run over his last two starts surrendering four earned runs in each covering 9.1 innings

Lincecum turned closer in his most recent appearance at Philadelphia last July 22, finishing the 14th inning to earn his first and only save of his career in SF’s 9-6 win. His other 13 outings have all been starts going 6-3 with a 3.29 ERA.

Jerome Williams (3-5, 5.49 ERA) allowed a pair of two-run home runs, accounting for all the runs, over five innings in Sunday’s loss to the Rockies. He gave up eight hits overall and did not walk a batter. He concluded a disappointing month going 1-4 with a 6.62 ERA in seven May starts following a 2-1 record and 3.80 ERA in four April starts.

Williams started his career with the Giants in 2003 pitching parts of three seasons with the club before his MLB journey. His only two starts against his former club resulted in losses with a 4.35 ERA in 10.1 innings.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“It was one of those series. Whatever could go wrong did go wrong. It’s one you have to put behind you; the day off is probably coming at a good time. We go on a road trip and we’ll see if we can get back on track.” – Giants manager Bruce Bochy after falling to the Pirates Wednesday for their fifth straight loss

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

After Philadelphia’s 4-1 Sunday loss to the Rockies, starter Jerome Williams is 3-5 with a 5.49 ERA. But those numbers don’t tell the full story of what’s been going wrong for Williams, or more accurately, when it has been going wrong. Williams has logged 31 outs in the fifth inning this season. In between those outs he’s allowed 14 runs for an ERA of 12.19, and 21 hits, including four home runs five doubles. The issue came up again Sunday when Williams hit a batter and gave up a two-run homer. Another double and two flyouts later, Williams worked his way out of the inning, but his day was done.

PROP TALK

As Buster Posey goes, so go the Giants. Posey had just one hit in 13 at-bats during the Giants’ five-game losing streak and the team’s offense left ATT Park in a bit of a funk. A visit to the Phils and facing Jerome Williams should help spark the bats. Williams allows opponents to bat .315 against him and Posey loves hitting in Citizens Bank Park where he owns a .392 career average with eight runs scored and eight driven in. Look for Posey to get his stroke back with a few hits and he drives in a couple against Williams.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Giants have been difficult to figure out this season. They had an eight-game losing streak at the beginning of the year and followed that with 20 wins during the month of May. Now they are back on a slide having lost five straight. The pitching has faltered a bit and the bullpen put some close games out of reach on their recent homestand.

Taking on the Phillies provides them with a great opportunity to get well and they take advantage against an erratic Jerome Williams while Tim Lincecum shuts down the light-hitting Phils.
