ODDS ANALYSIS
The Los Angeles Dodgers are struggling to score runs on the road and a trip to hitter-friendly Coors Field might be exactly what they need to break out. LA suffered its fourth straight road shutout, dropping the first of a three-game set 3-0 at St. Louis over the weekend. The Dodgers ended a franchise record 42 straight scoreless road innings stretch with a 5-1 win Saturday before tallying just once in Sunday’s loss playing below the scoreline for the sixth straight road game, fourth straight overall, with the under going 10-3 in LA’s last 13 games.
The Rockies are playing their best ball of the year, coming off a three-game sweep at Philadelphia. Colorado went 5-1 on the road trip and won for the seventh time in eight games with Sunday’s 4-1 win. The Rockies played as the underdog each time during that span finishing in the black 7.59 units and overall they are down 0.98 units. They’ve struggled against LA going 2-7 down 3.02 units in nine games with the over at 6-3.
PITCHING MATCHUP
The Dodgers were undecided on their starting pitcher for Game 1 of the doubleheader. A likely candidate is former Rockie Juan Nicasio, who tossed 1.1 innings in relief Friday at St. Louis and has pitched just 3.1 innings since May 15. Zack Greinke is scheduled to pitch Game 2 of the doubleheader but could take the mound in earlier if needed.
Jorge De La Rosa (1-2, 6.51 ERA) has not started a game since May 21 with a cut on the middle finger of his pitching hand. He allowed three runs on five hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 4.1 innings against the Phillies in his last outing. His start Tuesday will be his sixth against the NL West in seven turns.
De La Rosa tossed 7.1 shutout innings giving up just two hits with three strikeouts in his last outing against the Dodgers, a 7-1 win at Dodger Stadium on May 16. He’s 6-10 with a 5.48 ERA in 23 lifetime appearances.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“The hitting has been good, but the pitching has been the biggest key. Historically, this trip has been tough on us, so a sweep here is a big accomplishment.” – Rockies manager Walt Weiss after a sweep of the Phillies on Sunday to conclude a 5-1 road trip
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Rockies completed a successful road trip with a sweep of Philadelphia going 5-1 on the swing that started with a visit to Cincinnati. And the Rox did it with outstanding pitching, which is a rarity for this squad. Throughout their history they’ve always had better numbers on the road and this season is not different. The staff allowed just 14 runs during their road trip lowering the team ERA to 4.01 on the road. However, the Rockies have had difficulties in the mile high atmosphere in Denver with a staff ERA of 5.43 with four games of 10 or more runs allowed. Look for the Rockies staff to have some tough times even against the light-hitting Dodgers.
PROP TALK
Facing lefty Jorge De La Rosa won’t bother Dodgers first baseman Adrian Gonzalez, who has impressive numbers against the Rockies veteran and at Coors Field. Gonzalez has 17 hits in 46 lifetime at-bats against De La Rosa with three home runs and 14 driven in with a .308 average at Coors Field. He went 4 for 7 with five RBIs in two games in Denver earlier this season and will help the Dodger snap out of an offensive slumber with a few hits and RBIs.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Part of the reason why the Dodgers are clinging to a slim lead in the NL West is their success against the Rockies this season and their overall play against sub-.500 teams. LA is 10 games over .500 against the bottom three teams in the NL West and took both games in a set at Colorado earlier this season.
Coors Field is a great place for the Dodgers to visit to break out of a road scoring slump. The Dodgers were shutout in four straight road games and had a franchise record 42 straight scoreless frames on the road. Welcome to Coors Field.
