The San Diego Padres might be just 47-52 and down 4.64 units on the season, but they're actually playing respectable ball on the road.
That could play into their hands on getaway day against the New York Mets, who are still struggling terribly offensively.
ODDS ANALYSIS
In spite of the fact that the Mets have one of the worst offenses in the bigs, they’re 51-48 and have been much better at Citi Field where they own a 34-16 record. The team is up 2.88 units this year, but +15.78 units have been won here at home, which equates to the third best mark in the game.
PITCHING MATCHUP
You'll have to keep your eye on this pitching matchup for Thursday's game, knowing that both Jon Niese and Andrew Cashner could both be moved at the deadline (heck, they could be traded for each other, too!).
Cashner is only 4-10 this season, but he's a lot better Sabermetrically than that record suggests. His 3.93 ERA and 102/35 K/BB ratio suggest that he’s a man poised for a much better record if he finds a new, winning team.
Niese meanwhile, is just 5-9 as well, but his 3.75 ERA is comparable to that of Cashner’s.
The southpaw was rocked by the Dodgers last weekend by allowing six runs in just three innings, but prior to that, he’d allowed three runs over 22.1 innings in three starts.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"I think this series coming up is a big one for us. We have to play well against a good team with good pitching, so we're going to have to do some good pitching of our own." – Padres outfielder Justin Upton on the upcoming series against the Mets
SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Mets got some help in their bullpen when they traded for Oakland closer Tyler Clippard. Clippard isn't a huge deal, but when you parlay him with Jeurys Familia, and Bobby Parnell, you've got three guys who have closed games in the past and could be useful for New York.
PROP TALK
There aren't a lot of hot Padres right now, and no one qualified is batting even .260 on the season. Yonder Alonso is about the only hope for successful prop bets on Thursday. The first baseman lacks power with just three dingers on the year, but he’s hit safely in four of his last five games and has reached base safely in six straight.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Cashner has been a victim of horrible luck lately, but here, he is going to get a bit of a reprieve against a team with a miserable offense which just isn't producing any runs whatsoever save for the 15-run outburst on Saturday against the Dodgers.
Niese is nothing special either, and though he isn't as bad as six runs in three innings suggests, he isn't the type of guy you can count on consistently to go out and fire seven shutout innings either.
Take the Pads on the road at plus odds on getaway day to at least steal one game in this series from the Mets.
