ODDS ANALYSIS
After ending a nine-game homestand with its fifth win, a 5-4 defeat of Seattle on Thursday, the Orioles start a quick three-game road trip to Miami in an interleague affair with the struggling Marlins.
The road has not been kind to the O’s this season with a 5-11 record and it’s been disastrous recently. The Orioles went 1-9 in their 10 away games prior to this series down 8.02 units on the moneyline during that stretch. Overall the O’s are in the red 2.67 units on the moneyline and 0.99 units on the runline. The O’s have been a strong under pick recently playing below the total in six of their last nine while going 18-17-3 on the year.
If you want to lose money bet on the Marlins. With such high expectations coming into the season the Fish have been a flop and a change of managers hasn’t gotten the desired effect. Miami dropped its seventh straight game – all at home – and were swept by the Diamondbacks Thursday, putting new manager Dan Jennings at 0-4. The Marlins are down 9.07 units through the first seven games of a 10-game homestand and in the red 12.61 units on the moneyline and 11.5 units on the runline this season.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Mike Wright (1-0, 0.00 ERA) was brilliant in his Major League debut blanking the Angels on four hits with six strikeouts and no walks over 7.1 innings Sunday for his first victory. With Bud Norris and Chris Tillman unable to pitch, Wright stepped in for the spot start and the O’s top prospect earned another shot with his sterling effort.
Dan Haren (4-2, 3.47 ERA) went eight innings giving up two runs on five hits for a no-decision Monday against Arizona. He struck out five with no walks on 98 pitches in a solid bounce-back outing after getting roughed up for six runs in 4.1 innings against the Dodgers.
Haren is 5-4 in 12 career starts against the O’s with a 3.87 ERA and 1.12 WHIP. He last faced the O’s on May 30, 2013 as a member of the Nationals giving up two runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings in a 2-0 loss.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“He was really impressive. It’s exciting for him. I’ve played with him in Double-A and Triple-A and to be a part of somebody’s debut, and an impressive debut at that, was special. He was carrying a really live fastball. He was able to sink it when he needed to and elevate it when he needed to.” – Orioles catcher Caleb Joseph following the debut of Mike Wright
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Marlins haven’t been terrible any statistical category, posting average pitching numbers and offensive numbers, and that makes their descent in the standings more puzzling. The same problems that plagued the marlins under Mike Redmond continue to hurt the team under new manager Dan Jennings – a lack of timely hitting and failures in the bullpen. On Thursday Sam Dyson failed to keep the score even allowing the Dbacks to score the game-winning run in the eighth inning after Miami tied the game in the sixth. The Marlins are a snowball rolling downhill right now.
PROP TALK
It’s been a tough stretch for the Marlins but they possess one of the most powerful hitters in baseball in Giancarlo Stanton. Any man who can hit a baseball out of Dodger Stadium deserves to be called that. Stanton’s average isn’t where we’re accustomed to seeing it, but the man has crushed some majestic long balls this season and during his career. If Stanton gets on a roll the Marlins may pull out of this funk they’re in right now and crawl out of the basement in the NL East. Stanton has five home runs in 10 games heading into this series and looks to be settling in after taking a pitch to the face at the end of last season. Look for him to welcome O’s rookie Mike Wright, who makes his first road start of his career.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The shutout pitching from Mike Wright in his Major League debut isn’t all that surprising. A top prospect in the O’s organization, he was unbeaten this season at Triple-A Norfolk and gave the staff a much-needed lift with his outing. The O’s used a first inning grand slam home run from Steve Pearce Thursday and squeaked by the Mariners, but playing on the road has been a struggle. The O’s will get well against the scuffling Marlins.
Apparently Mike Redmond wasn’t the problem with the struggling Marlins. The Fish were swept by the Dbacks in four games after naming Dan Jennings as manager providing the same effort that has taken them to the bottom of the NL East standings. Not quite where the Marlins envisioned themselves with such high hopes at the beginning of the season. The Fish aren’t as bad as their record indicates, are they?
