ODDS ANALYSIS
With both the Mets and Yankees surging coming into the 19th edition of the Subway Series, there’s plenty of buzz surrounding this three-game set, which concludes Sunday on ESPN.
The Mets tied a team record Thursday winning their 11th consecutive game and have been a bettors dream up 10.54 units on the moneyline through their first 16. Now officially the best team in baseball the Mets played the last 10 of their 11-game win streak as the favorite in the black 11.13 units during that span. They cashed the over seven times during the run and exceeded the total 10 times in their first 16 games.
Finishing off a 10-game road trip with three straight wins in Detroit the Yanks completed their trek taking seven games overall. Wagering on New York baseball this season will stretch your money clip. The Yanks haven’t been as profitable as the Mets at the window but still a good play up 2.31 units on the moneyline and 4.13 units on the runline. The under cashed three times in the Yanks four-game series at Detroit still they are a good over play at 11-5 through their first 16 with the over going 5-1 in the first six games at Yankee Stadium.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Mets starter Jonathon Niese (2-0, 1.50 ERA) allowed only a solo home run over 6.2 innings Tuesday against the Braves to improve to 2-0. Niese scattered four hits with four walks and five strikeouts and has allowed one earned run in each of his three starts this season.
Niese is 1-1 with a 2.05 ERA in four career starts against the Yankees giving up 32 hits and five walks in 26.1 innings. His only start at Yankee Stadium came on June 10, 2012 when he allowed two unearned runs on seven hits with a walk and six K’s in seven innings without a decision in a 5-4 Yankees win.
Nathan Eovaldi (1-0, 3.12 ERA) put together his best start of the season getting his first Yankees win Tuesday holding the Tigers to one run over seven innings. He scattered eight hits with four strikeouts and shut down the powerful Tigers lineup.
The right-hander is 1-3 with a 4.62 ERA in seven career starts against the Mets. He was shelled for six runs and six hits in 4.1 innings in his last start against the Mets as a Miami Marlin on Sept. 16, 2014.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“Our young guys are in for something they’ve never experienced before. So they’ve got to learn from it. But that can’t change the way they go about things. That can’t change the way they’re playing the game right now. Still got to do the little things to win. Still got to pitch like what we’re doing right now. Should be a fun weekend.” – Mets manager Terry Collins
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
New York belongs to the Yankees. Always has and always will, no matter how good the Metropolitans are or will be. The Mets are a nice story winning games with a franchise record win streak despite injuries and a pitching staff that’s been dominant. Mets starter Jonathon Niese has a nifty 1.50 ERA this season but it hasn’t been easy. He’s allowed 20 hits and eight walks in 18 innings for a 1.56 WHIP but his three starts have come against Atlanta twice and Philadelphia, two of the weaker hitting teams in baseball. The Yankees have nearly as many home runs as the Braves and Phils combined and they won’t let Niese off the hook when runners get on base.
PROP TALK
Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira has taken advantage of the short right field porch at Yankee Stadium for 91 of his 368 career home runs and, though the average isn’t where it will be in a few weeks, he’s got the pop back in his stick. Tex has whacked five homers this season to lead the team. A notorious slow-starter – he’s a career .237 hitter in April – Teixeira has done nothing to defy those numbers but as the calendar gets closer to May his numbers start to trend up. Look for Tex to heat up against Niese.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
With neither team pegged as a sure-fire contender and the six games between the clubs split up into two series four months apart, this Subway Series was expected to be the least anticipated one yet. The Mets have pitched their way to the best record in baseball against a favorable schedule that had them play nine of their first 16 games against teams projected to finish at the bottom of the NL East standings. But you still have to win the games and the Mets have done that.
The Bronx Bombers are back. With a team batting average hovering around .240, the Yankees are still able to score better than five runs a game thanks to the long ball. Four players have clubbed at least four homers and the Yanks have 21 through 16 games led by Mark Teixeira, who entered the series with a team-high five dingers. The Yankees took three of four from Detroit by limiting the mighty Tigers to just nine runs in their recent series. The hot streak continues for the Mets and they get to Jonathon Niese for the victory.
