The Boston Red Sox (18-20 SU, -4.24 Units) will be happy to be back at home after a 10-game road trip in which they went 5-5 and averaged just 2.3 runs per game. First up on Tuesday is a date with the Texas Rangers (16-22 SU, -1.46 Units).
ODDS ANALYSIS
The Rangers have actually been a much better team on the road this year than they have been at home. Texas is actually the third-best money team in the bigs on the road at +5.27 units in spite of the fact that it is just 10-9 SU in those games. This should be yet another example of an away game in which the Rangers are relatively heavy underdogs.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Wade Miley has had a couple really bad starts this season, but all in all, things aren't as bad as a 5.60 ERA suggest they are. We're not wild about all of his walks (16 over 35.1 innings), but the bottom line is that he’s put the team in a position to win his last three outings, games in which he’s posted just a 3.20 ERA.
Since his first start of the year, Yovani Gallardo has been rock solid. He has been the victim of virtually no run support, which is why he is just 3-5 on the year, but since allowing four runs in four innings in his first start, he hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in a single start and lasted at least five frames in each game.
QUOTE TO NOTE
"You can't get frustrated. We had some good at-bats. We hit the ball hard. We just didn't get any hits or didn't put it all together." – Red Sox second baseman Dustin Pedroia on his team's offensive struggles on this West Coast swing
SITUATIONAL BETTING
This last trip through the rotation was a good one for the Boston staff, but the bullpen wasn’t able to hold up its end of the bargain. The unit allowed two runs on Sunday to take a winnable game and put it out of hand, and the normally reliable Tom Layne and Junichi Tazawa combined to give up the losing run on Friday in Seattle as well. The Red Sox typically are much better in the back of their pen than in their rotation, but of late, they can't be trusted in live betting.
PROP TALK
Prince Fielder is killing the ball right now. He's batting .344 with five dingers and 23 RBIs, and has hit safely in seven straight games. In that stretch, Fielder has had at least one RBI in six of the seven, and only struck out three times in 28 at bats. Clearly, the big man is a safe bet to get onboard in this one, and homers aren't out of the question. Fielder has five home runs in 70 at bats here at Fenway Park in his career.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
If the Red Sox can get their offense going in this game, we expect there to be a deluge of runs scored for both sides. We trust that both starting pitchers will be okay, though not spectacular, and that should lead to the nine or more runs needed to safely put this game past the total. The over is clearly the better play even though the under is 13-3-1 in Boston's last 17 overall.
Boston 7, Texas 5
