ODDS ANALYSIS

With a little help from the Tigers, Oakland captured the series opener on Tuesday scoring five times in the seventh inning to erase a 3-0 deficit in a 5-3 win.

The teams are meeting for the second time in a week with Oakland’s win on Tuesday giving each team a pair of wins through the first four games of the season series.

The teams played the first four games of their season series below the scoreline with the under 7-3 in Detroit’s last 10. Despite Tigers’ starter Shane Greene’s lofty ERA, the under is 4-2 in his last six starts and 15-11-1 overall at Comerica Park. Detroit fell for the fifth time in eight home games with Tuesday’s loss, down 4.47 units in that span and the Tigers are just 14-13 at home this season, in the red 2.59 units.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Jesse Hahn (2-5, 3.77 ERA) most recently gave up three earned runs on seven hits in six innings in the A’s 5-3 loss to the Yankees on Saturday. He has thrown more than 100 pitches in six straight starts and has gone at least five innings every start this season.

Hahn twirled his first career shutout blanking the Tigers on four singles with five strikeouts on a season-high 112 pitches in his first career outing against Detroit on May 25.

No pitcher in modern Major League history had given up five homers in an outing of just five outs or fewer before Shane Greene (4-4, 5.19 ERA) on Saturday night against the Angels. He allowed seven earned runs taking the loss with his ERA going from 4.27 to 5.19 after the debacle. He had given up just three home runs in 59 innings prior to that outing.

Greene’s first career appearance against the A’s came last week in a loss with a four run sixth inning doing him in on May 25 in Oakland.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“It’s fair to say we’re struggling. I don’t think that’s a stretch by any means. When you are struggling, things happen. On the night you hit, the other team hits more. On the night you don’t hit, the other team scrapes out one. You need an out to get out of an inning, you can’t get that out. That’s just what happens when you’re struggling. Anaheim was a slap in the face, this was a punch in the gut.” – Tigers manager Brad Ausmus following Tuesday’s loss

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

The designated hitter spot in the Tigers lineup has been a major concern even when Victor Martinez was slotted there. With him out of the lineup with a balky knee, the spot has produced less, which is part of the reason why the Tigers have struggled to score runs. Detroit has gotten the following production from the DH spot that has included Martinez and a cast of others: two home runs, 20 RBIs, a .220 average and an AL worst .587 OPS. It’s impossible to have a productive offense when your cleanup hitter doubles as your designated hitter and puts those kinds of numbers up. And that’s where the Tigers are.

PROP TALK

Stephen Vogt had his seven-game hitting streak snapped in Tuesday’s series opener which means he’s due for a few hits. Vogt enjoyed Tigers pitching last week at O.co Coliseum, getting five hits in the three games with one coming against Shane Greene in three at-bats on May 25. Vogt leads the A’s in hitting, home runs and RBIs and is a better hitter on the road over his career with a .333 average at Comerica Park. The left-handed hitter hits righties well and Greene has given up a lot recently. Watch for a few Vogt hits and don’t be surprised if he goes deep.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Tigers look to stop the bleeding and their struggling offense goes against the young A’s right-hander who blanked them just last week. Detroit hasn’t been close to what they were during the first month of the season, the offense has taken a hiatus with Ian Kinsler, JD Martinez and Nick Castellanos all struggling and their pitching has been suspect.

A’s starter Jesse Hahn tossed a four-hit shutout at the Tigers in Oakland on May 25 but his numbers are much worse on the road giving the Tigers hope they can crack the scoreboard against him. Detroit has too many good sticks to get throttled by Jesse Hahn again.
