When the Astros and Yankees meet, low-scoring games tend to follow. The teams finish off a three-game set Wednesday after playing below the scoreline for the 12th time in the last 14 meetings with New York’s 1-0 win on Monday.
ODDS ANALYSIS
Houston’s road struggles continued yet they still hold the lead in the AL West following Monday’s 1-0 loss to the Yankees in the series opener. The loss was Houston’s 16th in its last 19 road contests where they scored just 2.2 runs per game. The under is 15-3-1 in that span, dropping the Astros to 24-36 on the road, down 11.55 units on the moneyline. The shutout extended Houston’s scoreless streak at Yankee Stadium to 20 innings. The teams split a four-game series in Houston in late June with Wednesday’s probables Collin McHugh and Michael Pineda squaring off in the finale of that series. The Astros posted the 3-1 win to get the split. Counting Monday’s game, four of the five meetings have played below the scoreline while under wagers have gone 12-2 in the last 14 contests between the clubs.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Collin McHugh (13-7, 3.96 ERA) pitched valiantly against Rays ace Chris Archer, but was the tough-luck loser during Archer’s one-hit shutout. He allowed just five hits – all singles – and one run over seven innings. It was the third time in his last four starts he’s allowed just a single run over seven innings and he sports a 1.67 ERA in 27 innings for the month.
In his first game against the Yankees, McHugh allowed just two hits and a run with eight strikeouts to pick up the win on June 28.
Michael Pineda (9-7, 3.97 ERA) makes his first start since going on the disabled list on July 30 with a muscle strain in his right forearm. He made two rehab starts at Triple-A before being summoned back to the big club. Over two starts before landing on the DL, Pineda surrendered nine earned runs in 11.2 innings losing both games.
Pineda allowed seven hits and three runs – two earned – with eight strikeouts over eight innings, losing to McHugh and Astros 3-1 on June 28.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“We’ve got guys who don’t chase out of the zone. We’re going to make you throw strikes. We were able to get three walks in the ninth and Carlos with the big hit.” – Yankees catcher Brian McCann on the team’s ninth-inning rally Monday that produced the winning run without the benefit of a base hit
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The recent performance of their starting pitchers has kept the Astros in first place during the month of August while the offense continues its sluggish existence. Including Scott Feldman’s eight shutout innings Monday, Houston starters have posted a 2.25 ERA in the team’s last 19 games, which includes 14 quality starts and a no-hitter by Mike Fiers. The club has gone just 9-10 in that stretch because the offense is hitting .201 and has been held to three or fewer runs 15 times. The Astros entered the series with the best ERA in the American League. The starters had the AL’s lowest ERA, while the bullpen ranked second behind Kansas City.
PROP TALK
Carlos Beltran has been delivering for the Yankees and he did in Monday’s win, driving in the only run with a sac fly in the bottom of the ninth inning. Earlier in the game he extended his hitting streak to eight games and the RBI was his 11th in 11 games, during which time he’s batted .375 with runners in scoring position.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
McHugh has endured the offensive woes of his mates more than anyone in his last three turns, getting just three runs of support total in those games, going 0-3 despite allowing just four runs. He’ll experience Yankees Stadium for the first time as he makes just his second road start in his last eight outings. And the New Yorkers can be tough to deal with. The young Astros will need to win on the road if they want to make the playoffs and the race is heating up. The Yanks, meanwhile, have been through this before.
