ODDS ANALYSIS
New York’s road woes continued with Monday’s 4-1 loss in Anaheim, their second straight and seventh in their last 10 away games, putting them down 4.45 units on the moneyline in that stretch. In three losses on their current road trip the Yankees have produced just three runs with the under at 4-1 through the first five-games of the journey.
They Yankees cashed the under in Nathan Eovaldi’s last start, a 3-2 win at Houston on Friday, but played over the scoreline in each of his seven previous starts.
The Angels haven’t scored more than four runs in any of the first seven games on their current homestand, but improved to 5-2 with Monday’s 4-1 win over the Yankees. The Halos have been just as stingy defensively holding opponents to three or fewer runs six times in seven games on the homestand with the under going 6-1. Overall the under is 11-2 in LA’s last 13 games. The under is 3-1 in the last four games started by Matt Shoemaker at Angel Stadium.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Nathan Eovaldi (7-2, 4.81 ERA) moves in to take Adam Warren’s spot in the rotation as the Yankees ditch the six-man rotation. Eovaldi goes for his third straight victory after holding the Astros to two runs over six innings with six strikeouts on Friday. The hard throwing righty has turned in consecutive decent outings after getting trounced in Miami on June 16.
Eovaldi held the Angels to a run on four hits in 5.1 innings getting the win in an 8-7 Yankees victory on June 5. He’s 1-1 with a 4.91 ERA and 1.91 WHIP in 14.2 innings over three starts lifetime against the Angels.
Matt Shoemaker (4-6, 5.03 ERA) got an extra two days rest before his last start to work on getting his mechanics straightened out and he responded with a sharp game against the Mariners on Friday throwing six innings of two-run ball. He’s been shifted around several times this month as the team is obviously frustrated with his inconsistency.
Shoemaker makes his first appearance against the Yankees in his 36th career start.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“I got my timing back, which was really good. Just getting my upper half and lower half working better together. When I do that, I execute my pitches better, and I felt like we did that tonight. Timing helps, I guess you could say, the crispness of the pitches.” – Angels’ pitcher Matt Shoemaker after six innings of two-run ball Friday.
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
Is there anything Mike Trout can’t do? Apparently not, and his skills were on full display Monday in the Angels’ 4-1 win over the Yankees. The AL MVP has made numerous highlight reel grabs in his young career and came up big with a pair of leaping, twisting, over-the-shoulder grabs near the center field warning track robbing Chris Young of run scoring extra base hits. Oh, he also hit a home run and stole a base, ho-hum just another day at the office. But the challenge was issued in spring training to have Trout play shallow to take away bloop hits, knowing he has the speed to get back on flyballs. The work has paid off nicely. “I just felt like I can get back on balls easier than coming in on balls,” he said. “Like tonight, trusting yourself that you can get to them.” Trout prevented three runs Monday with his grabs and countless others over the course of the season.
PROP TALK
If Jacoby Ellsbury doesn’t get hurt Brett Gardner remains a part-time option off the bench for the Yankees. Gardner is making the most of his chance while Ellsbury begins a rehab assignment and has 25 hits in 50 at-bats following his 3 for 5 night on Monday. He extended his hitting streak to seven straight with multiple hits in eight of his last 11 games raising his average from .262 to .305 in that stretch. He has four homers and scored 15 times. He’s brutalized Angels pitching this season with two doubles, a triple and home run batting .444 with a 1.307 OPS.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
It was around this time last year when the Angels kicked it into another gear to run away with the AL West and the best record in baseball. Surprisingly they are only four games off their 2014 pace through 77 games. Offensively they haven’t been as good, but they didn’t have closer Huston Street at this time last season. The Halos need Matt Shoemaker to round into his 2014 form, and if he does they could easily put a serious run together. The Yankees’ inconsistent play is just frustrating and they remain an average team in a bad division. Moving Adam Warren, who has the lowest ERA of any pitcher with more than one start, is a bad move by the organization.
