ODDS ANALYSIS

The New York Yankees have trouble winning on the road and it’s been a difficult task for the Mariners to get victories on their own field. Something has to give when these two meet in the middle of a three-game set.

It’s been a rough stretch for the Yankees on the road after dropping three of four at Oakland over the weekend to fall to 3-10 in their last 13 away games. The Yanks are down 8.4 units during that run and are in the red 1.58 units on the year. New York is 3-7 in CC Sabathia’s 10 starts this season with two straight defeats while cashing the over in three of his last four outings.

Seattle has struggled at home as much as the Yankees have on the road recently. The M’s dropped three of four to the Indians over the weekend going 3-6 in their last nine with the under at 2-7 over that span. The M’s are in the red 5.7 units while going 12-13 at Safeco Field following Sunday’s extra-inning loss.

PITCHING MATCHUP

CC Sabathia (2-7, 5.67) arrives in Seattle having lost his last two starts permitting a total of 11 runs and 15 hits in 8.1 innings to the Rangers and Athletics. He tossed four scoreless frames at the A’s before surrendering all five runs over the next two-plus innings. He’s pitched better on the road this season with a 3.99 ERA in seven away starts.

Sabathia is 8-1 with a 2.09 ERA in 11 career starts at Safeco Field and 12-5 with a 2.63 ERA in 22 career starts against the Mariners.

With Seattle lefty James Paxton on the disabled list with a sore finger, his spot in the rotation is up for grabs. Paxton joins Hisashi Iwakuma on the DL leaving the M’s short two of its top three starters. Seattle has few options, but reports have mentioned left-hander Mike Montgomery and righty Justin Germano as possibilities from Triple-A Tacoma, while reliever Tom Wilhelmsen has filled in to make starts in the past.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“We have to figure out a way to play the same style of baseball at home and on the road. It’s not realistic to play as well on the road, but be a little bit more consistent.” – Yankees designated hitter Alex Rodriguez after losing three of four in Oakland over the weekend.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

With James Paxton put on the disabled list with an injured finger on his pitching hand, Tuesday’s spot in the rotation will come down to a Triple-A call up or a bullpen member making a spot start. There will likely be some innings available for the rest of the pen regardless of who gets the call and that could be risky for the M’s. The last two games of the Cleveland series took a heavy toll on Seattle’s bullpen with four relievers pitching Saturday and seven relievers tossing seven innings in Sunday’s 12-inning loss. The pen worked a total of 16 innings in the four-game series and there are some tired arms out there.

PROP TALK

Yankees right fielder Carlos Beltran has sizzled all May after a poor April. He raised his average to a season-high .245 after recording two hits in Saturday’s win over the Athletics, including his fourth home run of the season. In 24 May games Beltran is batting .308 with his four homers coming since May 10. That’s a long way from the .162 the switch-hitter batted in April. “It takes guys a while to get going. His track record tells he will come out of it,” manager Joe Girardi said of Beltran. Look for the streak to continue with a few hits and runs scored.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Mariners have a tough time handling success. They capped off a 6-3 road trip with a three-game sweep of the Rays and returned home to lose three of four to Cleveland not scoring more than three runs in any game. They lost starter James Paxton, who was having a fantastic season, to a finger injury and two of their top three starters are on the DL, leaving the staff in disarray.

The Yankees are having their own struggles at the plate, but if they get five solid innings from starter CC Sabathia, which he is more than capable of doing despite his lofty ERA, the New Yorkers can turn to their strong pen to close it out. They waited an inning too long in CC’s last outing and manager Joe Girardi doesn’t make the same mistake.
