ODDS ANALYSIS
If the Rangers could play all their games on the road they would project to 88 wins this season, which might be enough to capture a wild card spot or even the AL West. Unfortunately they have to play half their games at home and that hasn’t been good for them. The Rangers improved to 12-10 in away games this season by taking the final two of a three-game set at Boston to start a nine-game road trip. They look to continue that success in Yankee Stadium, which has been a house of horrors for them over the last few seasons. But Texas has been a strong road team moving to 6-3 in their last nine following Thursday’s win, up 7.43 units on the moneyline in that span. Overall the Rangers are in the black 0.73 units on the moneyline and in the red 1.91 units on the runline.
The Yankees hit a stretch where they played their worst baseball of the season and with that, in the city of New York, comes talk of trades as the Yanks lost their grip on first place in the AL East. The Yanks have never been shy about pulling the trigger on a deal or signing players to outlandish contracts and with the name Steinbrenner listed as principal owner, well, you know what that’s all about. It’s still early and this team ran into some red-hot clubs on its recent 2-7 trip so there’s no reason to panic just yet. The Yankees finished their trip in the red 5.53 units on the moneyline with the under going 6-3, an indication the offense has been slumping.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Yovani Gallardo (3-6, 4.26 ERA) surrendered four runs and 10 hits with two home runs over five innings in a loss to the Red Sox on Tuesday. He’s yielded at least three earned runs five of his last six starts and is 1-5 with a 4.63 ERA in that span.
Gallardo will be making only his second career start against the Yankees.
Chris Capuano (0-1, 12.00 ERA) couldn’t make it out of the fourth inning in his first start of the year, allowing four runs and four hits in three-plus innings against the Royals on Sunday. He returned from a quad injury and was understandably rusty in his season debut.
Capuano pitched twice in relief against Texas last year giving up two earned runs in 2.2 innings and owns a 10.57 ERA giving up nine runs on 14 hits over 7.2 innings in four lifetime appearances.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“We’ve played tight games. It’s not like we’ve played really bad baseball, we just haven’t had the big hit. All the games we’ve played on the road trip, I feel like have been within a couple of runs other than maybe one or two games. It’s going to be nice getting back home and starting over.” – Yankees catcher Brian McCann
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
When the Yankees struggle so much that trade talks start swirling in the New York media, you know players have to get nervous, especially since a man with the last name of Steinbrenner is still the principal owner of the club. Granted it’s still early and the Yankees are still near the top of the division standings, but there is something missing with this club. They did play three of the hottest teams in baseball on their recent road trip, but their 2-7 showing brought on the talk and the New York media loves a circus. Winning is the best deodorant and the Yanks can quiet all the talk with a nice little winning streak.
PROP TALK
Yes, Chase Headley is still around. In case anyone was wondering. Just three years and two teams removed from his breakout season, Headley has retreated, though the Yanks have him firmly entrenched as their third baseman. In 2012 Headley smacked 31 homers and led the NL with 115 RBIs for San Diego and a star was born. Not so fast, Headley was injured the next season, his production fell off a cliff and he would be dealt to NY the following year. His numbers with the Yanks are more in line with is career totals minus that 2012 aberration. He’ll hit around .250, give you 10-15 home runs and drive in about 50. He’s been good against Texas and Yovani Gallardo so look for him to get a few hits and maybe even go yard.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Rangers like playing on the road but have found Yankee Stadium to be the wrong place to try and get well. They took two of three from Boston before this series, but it’s the Red Sox, a team that’s going through a horrendous stretch. The Yanks haven’t been much better, but they are better. A rough stretch continues for Yovani Gallardo and the Rangers’ woes in Yankee Stadium continue with a loss.
The Yankees limped home after a 2-7 road trip that saw them play three of the hottest teams in baseball. They didn’t play poorly, just not well enough to win. A return home is what this group needs and another shot on the bump is what Chris Capuano needs. Cap’s been a serviceable starter over his 10-year career and needed an outing to work out the kinks. He got that last outing and the Yanks need a solid effort from him on Sunday. The veteran knows what’s at stake and he delivers for the home team.
