ODDS ANALYSIS
The Rangers kicked off a nine-game road trip by taking two of three in Boston to improve to 12-10 away from home. Texas yielded only seven runs during a 3-1 stretch, which began Sunday with a 5-1 win over Cleveland to close out a homestand, and the under is 4-0 in those games. The Rangers have been much stronger on the road with two straight victories at Boston putting them at 6-3 in their last nine away games and up 7.43 units on the moneyline in that span. Overall the Rangers are in the black 0.73 units on the moneyline and in the red 1.91 units on the runline.
The Yankees limped home from a nine-game road trip and look to get back on track when they host the Rangers. Ending their road trip with three straight losses, New York was in control of the AL East before going 2-7 on its trek to fall behind Tampa Bay in the standings. A lack of offense has been the biggest problem for the Yanks, who were limited to two runs or fewer in six of their past eight games with the under at 6-2. New York is 3-1 in CC Sabathia’s last four starts while cashing the under three times.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Texas’ Nick Martinez (3-0, 1.88 ERA) pitched wildly against the Indians on Sunday, walking five while allowing one fun over five innings. He did strikeout six but threw just 57 of his 103 pitches for strikes. His is 1-0 with a 3.68 ERA in four starts in May and sports a 1.52 ERA in four road starts.
Martinez made two starts against the Yankees last season going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA. He tossed 5.1 scoreless innings giving up just three hits at Yankee Stadium on July 22.
CC Sabathia (2-5, 4.67 ERA) hurled seven innings of one-run ball last Saturday in a win over the Royals, scattering five hits with five strikeouts and no walks. He’s after his third straight win after permitting four earned runs on 12 hits in 14 innings while walking two and fanning 14 in his previous two outings.
Sabathia is 11-3 with a 4.45 ERA in 18 career starts against the Rangers but hasn’t faced them since the 2012 season.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“We’re struggling right now. I said this division is going to be tough all year. Teams are going to go through their ups and downs, and right now we went through a tough road trip. We get to go home, which is good, but we need to play better there.” – Yankees manager Joe Girardi after a 2-7 road trip.
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
Part of the problem with New York’s recent struggles has been the starting rotation. The starters have posted a 5.79 ERA in eight games before this series not giving manager Joe Girardi a chance to utilize his shutdown bullpen options of Dellin Betances and Anddrew Miller. CC Sabathia had his best outing of the season last Saturday allowing a run in seven innings but his last four starts have been on the road. In two home starts he’s been tagged for 11 runs in 10.2 innings and allowed three home runs to the Mets last time he took the mound at Yankee Stadium.
PROP TALK
It was around this time last year that Prince Fielder underwent season ending neck surgery, ending his streak of 547 consecutive games played; whatever he did during his recovery certainly worked. Fielder had a nine-game hitting streak end Thursday at Boston, dropping his average to .340, but you might expect that after he hit safely in 18 of the first 20 games during the month. Fielder has four hits in 14 career at-bats versus CC Sabathia with one homer and Prince has been dialed in all season. The powerful left-handed hitter will take advantage of the short porch in Yankee Stadium and go deep against his former Milwaukee teammate.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
By looking at the records we could say this group of Rangers would much rather play on the road. Texas improved to 12-10 on the road after taking the final two of a three-game set in Boston and look to make up some ground in the AL West during their current nine-game trek. The Rangers have received stellar pitching during a 3-1 stretch with their beleaguered bullpen coming up large. The Rangers haven’t enjoyed much success in Yankee Stadium but they take advantage of a fragile group to get a win behind Nick Martinez.
There are ebbs and flows over the course of a long season and right now the Yankees are going through a rough stretch. The team is happy to be back in the Bronx after a horrendous 2-7 road trip that saw them lose the last three. The trip started well enough with an 11-5 win at Tampa Bay but it took the Yanks five games to match that run total. The big sticks have been silent and the Yanks will have to create offense without Jacoby Ellsbury, who went on the DL. Things may get worse before they get better.
