The Orioles and Yankees continue their AL East showdown series with the middle game of a three-game set. Baltimore looks to gain some ground but must improve on their road win total, which is the second-lowest in the AL.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The team’s split the first 10 games of the season series and they each have 27 home wins, an indication of how closely matched they are. Baltimore’s struggles on the road are the reason why they trail New York in the AL East. The O’s won the final two games of a three-game set at Detroit over the weekend, improving to 3-6 in their last nine away games, but the O’s enter this series 17-26 overall on the road, down 8.24 units on the moneyline. The Yankees, meanwhile, won four of their last five in the Bronx, up 2.44 units in that stretch, and improved to 27-17 overall at Yankee Stadium, in the black 1.36 units.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Kevin Gausman (1-1, 5.00 ERA) was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk before the All-Star break to stay on a five-man rotation schedule. He will be recalled to make his fourth start of the season. Manager Buck Showalter wouldn’t commit to keeping Gausman in the rotation for the rest of the season, but he’ll be given the chance to take the fifth starter job. He was tagged for seven earned over 3.2 innings in his last start after posting a 1.59 ERA over 11.1 innings of his first two.

Gausman is 1-0 with a 1.86 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings over four appearances (one start) at Yankee Stadium.

Iván Nova (1-3, 3.42 ERA) matched his longest outing of the season going 6.2 innings allowing a season-high four runs in a loss to the Red Sox on July 11. He’s lost his last three starts while posting a 4.76 ERA, and hasn’t fooled many hitters with his underwhelming fastball velocity and has just 12 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

He’s made a dozen starts against the Orioles in his career going 5-3 with a 5.03 ERA across 82.1 innings.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“If you win series, you put yourself in a good situation. We hadn’t won too many series going into the break so this is a good win. Now, let’s go to New York and do the same thing.” – Orioles outfielder Adam Jones after winning two of three games in Detroit over the weekend.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

At the unofficial halfway point of the season Orioles’ manager Buck Showalter is still tinkering with his corner outfield spots. Chris Davis is the answer at one position however the other is up for grabs. Davis started in right field in all three games in Detroit following the All-Star break. He started 60 games at first base and 11 at designated hitter before moving to the outfield on a regular basis once Delmon Young was designated for assignment on July 1. Six different players have started in left field with the combination of Travis Snider and Nolan Reimold platooning there over the weekend. Snider is batting .255 with three home runs in 62 games, while Reimold is hitting .224 with two homers and five RBIs in 21 games. “I was hoping at this point we’d be a little more set there but it hasn’t worked out that way,” Showalter said.

PROP TALK

The training wheels are off Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop, who started three straight games over the weekend for the first time since coming off the disabled list. Schoop, who missed two and a half months with a knee injury, went 6 for 12 at Detroit over the weekend and his hitting .344 (11 for 32) with three homers and seven RBIs since coming off the DL on July 5. He’s hit safely in seven of nine games since his return with four multi-hit games. Schoop is expected to be the sparkplug the O’s have been missing at the top of the order and he’s playing like it.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

Neither starter has been able to go deep into games, likely turning this one into be a battle of the bullpens early. Both teams are good in the backend but the O’s have been better bridging the gap from the sixth to the eighth innings. The O’s were smart with Gausman, sending him down before the break to keep him on a regular schedule while Nova hasn’t pitched since July 11. He’ll be rusty at the outset and the O’s take advantage with a few runs and lean on their pen for the victory.
