ODDS ANALYSIS
The Tigers haven’t completely recovered from a disastrous eight-game losing streak but they’re trying. Detroit is 6-4 in 10 games since that slide, up 2.29 units on the moneyline, and things are starting to look up with Justin Verlander back in the rotation and Victor Martinez about to join the lineup.
Despite going 4-8 in their last 12 road games the Tigers still have a winning record at 16-14 in the black 2.6 units.
Looking to make up ground in the AL East, the Yankees continue a homestand after sweeping the Marlins in a two-game interleague set. The Yankees improved to 9-1 in their last 10 home games with Thursday’s 9-4 win over Miami and are 18-11 up 3.21 units at Yankee Stadium this season. New York held the Tigers to nine runs total while taking three of four at Detroit when the teams met in April with three of the games played below the scoreline.
PITCHING MATCHUP
Alfredo Simón (7-3, 2.58 ERA) picked up the win tossing five shutout innings Sunday against Cleveland. He scattered three hits and struck out five lowering his ERA to 1.80 over his last six starts. His combination of changeup and splitter has kept hitters off-balance over the last few starts.
Simón hurled 7.1 innings giving up just one run on seven hits with seven strikeouts in a 2-1 win over the Yankees on Apr. 20. He’s pitched twice at Yankee Stadium making one start going 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA over six innings.
Nathan Eovaldi (4-2, 2.49 ERA) struggled mightily against his former Miami club in his last outing, unable to get out of the first inning and surrendering eight earned runs on nine hits. He retired the first batter in the game before relinquishing six singles and a triple to the next seven hitters. He had been pitching well before that disaster going 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in his four previous starts.
Eovaldi went seven innings allowing eight hits and a run to get the 5-2 win over Detroit on Apr. 21. It was his second career start against the Tigers.
QUOTE TO NOTE
“I think it’s a young starter still developing secondary pitches, still finding out exactly in a sense what type of a pitcher is he. He knows he’s got a great fastball, but he has to use his secondary stuff. His split has been working really well and he’s thrown well lately, but tonight it was up. It was not effective.” – Yankees manager Joe Girardi after starter Nathan Eovaldi failed to get out of the first inning in his last start
LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING
The Tigers are close to getting a big stick back in the middle of their lineup which will be welcomed by a team that has seen its run production drop off significantly since the middle of May. Victor Martinez hasn’t played since May 18 when he was placed on the disabled list with inflammation in his left knee and the injury obviously affected him. He was hitting just .216 with one home run when put on the DL, but the switch-hitting DH will be an important addition to a right-handed dominant lineup. You might recall Martinez finished second in the 2014 AL MVP voting after hitting .335 with 32 home runs and 103 RBIs playing 151 games last season. Martinez joined the team in New York for the weekend series and could be in the lineup.
PROP TALK
One player who will benefit from the return of Victor Martinez to the lineup is Miguel Cabrera. Not that he needs much help. Cabrera extended his hit streak to six games with his 15th home run of the season on Wednesday and is batting .500 (11 for 22) during the streak with three homers and 12 RBIs. Cabrera continues to be a destructive force in the middle of the Tigers’ lineup hitting .342 with 15 homers and 51 RBIs to lead the team in all categories and is a career .371 hitter with 10 homers in 20 games at Yankee Stadium. He’s faced Eovaldi six times with three singles.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
The Tigers are hopeful the return of Justin Verlander to the rotation and Victor Martinez to the lineup can turn their fortunes around. After a blistering start Detroit finds itself staring up at Kansas City and Minnesota in the AL Central and gets a Yankees squad that’s playing well in their own yard. New York improved to 9-1 in its last 10 home games by taking both games from the Marlins and took three of four from Tigers earlier this season. We weren’t that high on Nate Eovaldi before his implosion last outing and the Tigers take advantage of the fragile hurler.
Detroit 6, New York 4
