The Boston Red Sox will get another shot at taking down their rivals in the AL East when they take on the New York Yankees in the finale of a three-game set Thursday. That might be all the Sox have to look forward to as their disappointing season continues. New York is crossing home plate at an astonishing pace following a 13-3 beat down in the series opener.

ODDS ANALYSIS

Losers of 13 of 18 after the All-Star break, the Red Sox joined the race for worst record in baseball. Not finishing dead last is all Boston has to play for over the final two months of the season. The Sox were overmatched in a 13-3 loss Tuesday in the series opener, losing for the eighth time in nine meetings with the Yankees this season. The Yankees meanwhile, continued their torrid scoring pace with another double-digit effort Tuesday, their fourth in seven games. New York scored 90 times in 10 games, starting with an 8-5 win at Minnesota on July 25, and the over is 8-2 in that stretch.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Eduardo Rodriguez (6-3, 4.34 ERA) continues to pitch as Boston’s most reliable starter in the absence of Clay Buchholz. He struggled with his control in a no-decision Friday against the Rays, walking a career-high four while throwing just 64 of 110 pitches for strikes. Although he has endured a few rough outings, the lefty has allowed three runs or fewer in nine out of 12 starts this season.

Rodriguez was solid in a win over the Yankees on July 11, giving up two runs on five hits in 6.1 innings. Both runs came on solo homers from Alex Rodriguez and Jacoby Ellsbury.

C.C. Sabathia (4-8, 5.54 ERA) experienced symptoms of dehydration after his last start at Texas when he allowed nine hits and five runs in five innings. He has now permitted five earned runs in each of his last two starts getting touched for five home runs in just 10.2 innings. He likely retains his spot in the rotation with Michael Pineda’s injury still things aren’t getting any better for him.

He faced the Red Sox on May 1 at Fenway Park, allowing two runs over six innings in a no-decision and owns an 11-12 record against Boston in 30 career starts.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“When the bottom of the order is as productive as it’s been the last week or so, it just makes our entire team better. You can score a lot of runs that way.” – Yankees first baseman Mark Teixeira after the team scored 77 runs over the final nine games of a recent road trip.

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

Despite stardom that spans well over a decade, the struggles of Boston designated hitter David Ortiz have raised the question: Are Big Papi’s days as the Red Sox offensive centerpiece dwindling? These days Ortiz is supplying the answer with his play. On July 26, Papi collected four hits and a career-high seven RBIs against the Tigers. He launched his 20th home run of the year the next game, making it 14 straight seasons of reaching that mark. Legendary Ted Williams with 16 is the only Sox player to have more. He’s been hitting lefties as well, going 3 for 3 off White Sox ace Chris Sale last week and his hot streak can be trace to June 11 when he clubbed the first of 14 home runs in 44 games.

PROP TALK

Chase Headley is as hot as the rest of the Yankees team during their offensive outburst. Headley extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a pair of hits, including a double, in Tuesday’s romp over the Red Sox. The switch-hitting third baseman is batting .412 over his streak with 12 RBIs and 14 runs scored, lifting his overall average to a season-high .278. Like a majority of players in the AL, Headley has feasted on Sox pitching this season going 13 for 41 with six extra-base hits, including a pair of home runs.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

It’s been an adventure for the Yankees with C.C. Sabathia on the hill. His numbers are horrible this season but the Yanks are forced to keep him in the rotation with Michael Pineda out. There is a bright side, however. Sabathia has actually been decent in his last two starts at Yankee Stadium, compiling a 2.38 ERA with eight strikeouts over 11.1 innings and he should be relaxed knowing his mates are scoring runs in bunches.
