Yankees, top prospect Severino, host Red Sox Wednesday on ESPN

2015-Boston-at-New-York-Lines

The New York Yankees will send their top prospect Luis Severino to the hill when they face their bitter rivals the Boston Red Sox in the middle of a three-game set. No matter where these teams are in the standings, you can always expect some fireworks. And the last place Red Sox would enjoy bringing the Yankees down to the rest of the pack in the AL East.

ODDS ANALYSIS

The last time the Red Sox faced the Yankees they had plans of getting back into the race in the AL East. Both teams are in entirely different positions now. Boston dropped two of three at home to New York in front of the All-Star break, and then lost 11 of 13 on the other side to join the race for the worst record in baseball instead. The Yankees put up 27 runs in three games against the White Sox over the weekend to push their lead in the division to 5.5 games. The Yankees are averaging 8.6 runs while winning six of its last nine with the over at 9-2 in their last 11, and has a three-game set with the remodeled Toronto Blue Jays after the Red Sox leave town. The Yankees won six of the last seven meetings after dropping the first two games of the season series. They will play in the Bronx for the first time since the second series of the year.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Amid a string of poor Boston pitching performances, knuckleballer Steven Wright (4-4, 4.53 ERA) tossed his best outing of the year on Thursday, giving up two runs and fanning eight batters over a career-high seven innings – good enough to outduel White Sox ace Chris Sale. He’ll have a number of opportunities over the final two months after the Sox put Rick Porcello on the disabled list.

Wright got the win throwing the final five frames in the team’s 19-inning marathon at Yankee Stadium on Apr. 10. He’s allowed two earned runs in 10 innings over two career appearances against New York.

Ranked as the Yankees’ No. 1 prospect by MLB Pipeline, Luis Severino (0-0, NA) will make his Major League debut after going 7-0 with a 1.91 ERA in 11 starts at Triple-A. Severino is a key reason why the Yankees made no major moves at the deadline. The righty throws hard, has great movement on his off-speed pitches and rocketed through the Yankees farm system.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“I’m excited to see him. There’s been a lot of talk about him. I don’t want to put too much pressure on him. I’m not going to make too much of one start, two starts, three starts. I know the kid is talented and I know at some point he’s really going to help us. I think we’re all interested to see how he handles it.” – Yankees manager Joe Girardi on the MLB debut of top prospect Luis Severino

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

With two months left in the season it has become clear the Yankees will get to play in October on the strength of their offensive muscles. The starting rotation doesn’t provide enough length and is without a true ace. The lack of distance has added work to the bullpen. Yet the one constant has been a lineup that has never been better than it has been recently. The Yanks ended a road trip Sunday with a 12-3 laugher at Chicago, led by home runs from Jacoby Ellsbury and Mark Teixeira. New York produced 77 runs over the final nine games of a 10-game road trip where they went 6-4. Didi Gregorius, who finished the trip batting .438 with 12 RBIs, has been the hottest Yankee hitter. Luis Severino has yet to pitch in the big leagues, Michael Pineda is on the disabled list and Masahiro Tanaka, Nathan Eovaldi and C.C. Sabathia have all been up and down. So, it’s imperative the lineup continues to produce cushions for the pitchers to work with.

PROP TALK

Mark Teixeira supplied plenty of punch for the Yankees when they were throwing lefts and rights to the opposition during their recent road trip. Tex blasted his 29th home run of the season Sunday in Chicago for his fifth home run in four games. He hit .467 during those games with nine RBIs and six runs scored while the Yankees plated 33 runs. Tex has struggled against the Sox this season but faces them in the middle of a hot streak against a pitching staff that is reeling. Teixeira homered off Wright earlier this season and 23 of his 29 on the year have come off right-handers.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

You never know what to expect from a top prospect making his big league debut. It’s quite different facing the Red Sox in Yankee Stadium compared to pitching in front of a few thousand spectators at the Triple-A parks. The 21-year-old Severino makes his first MLB start with plenty of hype surrounding him. The Yankees have been pounding the baseball and will likely support their young phenom with plenty of offense for a win in his debut.
