For bettors looking for a trend to follow in this one, there are a few to keep in mind. Arizona is 6-2 ATS in its last eight against Big Ten opponents, while Michigan State is 17-7 ATS over its last 24 games outside of Big Ten play. Each of the last four meetings between these two sides has ended up under the total and 10 of Michigan State’s last 12 games against PAC-12 opponents went under the number.

Injury Report

In Arizona’s first exhibition game, disaster struck Ray Smith once again. For the third time, Smith tore his ACL effectively ending his season and his college basketball career. Smith was one of the top recruits in the country two seasons ago, but he has suffered bad break after bad break. He was supposed to contribute depth and possibly challenge for a starting roster spot if he stayed healthy, however that just wasn’t meant to be.

Smith’s injury comes at a tricky time as the Wildcats may not be without two of their projected starters when they take on the Spartans. Chance Comanche was indefinitely suspended by coach Sean Miller for academic reasons, but might be able to play in Friday’s game against Michigan State.

The bigger concern has been the absence of Arizona’s top returning scorer Allonzo Trier. Miller has been silent on whether or not Trier will travel with the Wildcats to Hawaii for the Armed Forces Classic and has yet to disclose why Trier’s status is up in there. The loss of Trier would be a big blow to an Arizona team that lost a lot of its scoring power to graduation.

Michigan State is banged up as well. The Spartans will be without Gavin Schilling, a player expected to be one of the team’s best rebounders this year, as well as Ben Carter, a UNLV transfer who was going to see big minutes. The loss of these two would be somewhat mitigated here if Comanche didn’t play, but Comanche and Arizona might control the glass if he suits up for the Wildcats.

Player to Watch

Denzel Valentine has left East Lansing and Michigan State needs a do-it-all type player to fill his shoes. Rather than turn to a veteran leader in the mold of Valentine, the Spartans will be turning to freshman phenom Miles Bridges in 2016.

Tom Izzo has already called Bridges the most talented player he has ever recruited and he insists he is not overstating this. If you watch Bridges for a minute or two it’s easy to fall in love with him. He glides through the court at 6’7 230 lbs and can have an impact in any dynamic of the game. There are few players in college basketball that possess the same skill set he has.

The suspensions of Comanche and Trier loom large here as the Wildcats would likely be favored assuming both played in this one. The two still might but the best play is going to be the under. Even if Trier and Comanche play, they are still going to be rusty and haven’t been able to develop chemistry with their teammates in the exhibitions.

College Basketball Odds: Michigan State 67, Arizona 62
