Chris Clemons has put the Campbell Fighting Camels on his back and is trying to take them to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 1992. The 5’9 guard has torched two higher ranked teams in the first three rounds of the Big South Tournament and is now looking to show his stuff against the host team. The Winthrop Eagles have shined throughout the season, but did lose a few nail biters in conference and have to watch out with how Clemons is playing.

Campbell has covered with ease in all three of its Big South Tournament games thus far. The Camels pasted lowly Presbyterian before edging UNC Asheville as a 12.5-point underdog and reached this point after knocking off Radford by 16.
Winthrop was a traditional tournament mainstay in the mid-2000s, but hasn’t made the NCAA tournament since 2008. The Eagles have failed to cover in both of their postseason games, missing out on covering against Charleston Southern by one point and then needing overtime to defeat Gardner-Webb on Friday night.
Player to Watch
This one goes without saying. Campbell lives and dies by Clemons and he has been a machine these lase three games. He is averaging 37 PPG and is shooting out of his mind as well. Clemons is 39 of 66 from the floor during the Big South Tournament, knocking down almost 60 percent of his shots. From downtown he has been superb too, hitting 50 percent of his attempts.
Surprisingly, he can even swipe a few rebounds and leads the team in assists as well this season. His shooting is critical as this team doesn’t have another real scoring threat assuming Kyre’ Hamer doesn’t suit up on Sunday. Hamer is a solid shooter from downtown, but missed the Radford game with an injury and it’s unclear whether or not he can play on Sunday afternoon. If not, even more of the burden will be on Clemons’ shoulders.
Key Stat
Winthrop is one of the higher scoring teams in college basketball and the Eagles have their own undersized guard that leads them in this area. Keon Johnson checks in at just 5’7, but is the big man on the team when it comes to points. He is averaging 22.1 PPG this season and isn’t afraid to launch from three, averaging 7.5 attempts from downtown a game.
This team is relatively efficient by small college standards, with the top five scorers all hitting at least 42 percent of their shots from the floor. Those numbers look even better when you consider how often this team shoots from three too. A little less than 43 percent of Winthrop’s field goal attempts are from downtown but this team can win even without shooting a great percentage.

These teams met twice this season, with Winthrop winning both times. The first game should have been a double-digit Eagles win, but they went just 14 of 25 from the line on the night. In the second meeting, Johnson stole the show, nailing 70 percent of his shots on the way to a 39-point performance.
It’s hard to beat a team three times in one season, but Winthrop is playing on its home court and should do just that. Assuming Clemons doesn’t continue to shoot the lights out, Winthrop will out-rebound the smaller Camels and turn the increased possessions into more points. Keep an eye on Xavier Cooks of Winthrop, as he is the best player on the floor aside from the diminutive guards and can lead the Eagles to victory if Johnson is off his game.
