College Basketball Odds - Davidson Wildcats at North Carolina Tar Heels Game Preview

Davidson-at-North-Carolina-bm

Davidson is known for producing Stephen Curry and has continued to keep the program rolling since his departure. Davidson is a solid mid-major program, but beating North Carolina is a challenge on a whole other level.

The Tar Heels should be heavy favorites and take care of business, although keep an eye on the spread as Davidson may be able to cover it depending on how many points they are getting.

Don't miss the hardwood action from the Dean E. Smith Center at 9 p.m. ET on Wednesday, December 7, 2016.

North Carolina is 8-1 straight up and 6-3 against the spread on the season. The Tar Heels have been heavy favorites much of the time at the Dean Dome, and have been impressive as they have covered in all five opportunities.

Davidson is 5-2 overall and 4-3 against the spread. The Wildcats have gone on the road four times this year and have covered in three of those matchups. This should be a good game between a pair of teams who have done well against the spread.

Injury Report

Joel Berry II – The North Carolina junior guard sprained his left ankle in Sunday’s win over Radford and did not return to the game. The junior has been a difference-maker for the Tar Heels so far this season, averaging 16 points, 4.3 rebounds and 4.8 assists per game.

It’s not clear how much time Berry will miss. He dropped a season-high 24 points in the win over Oklahoma State on November 22nd and has scored 20-plus points in four games this season.

Berry II is one of many ultra-talented Tar Heels. If he can’t play, it could affect the team’s rhythm as it must figure out who will get the shots he vacates. Keep an eye on this development as the game gets close.

Key Stat

89.6. That’s how many points per game the North Carolina offense is averaging so far this season. The Tar Heels rank No. 6 in the country for points per game right now.

North Carolina put up 95 points in its most recent win over Radford. The victory marked the team’s sixth win of the season with 90 points or more.

North Carolina is led in scoring by Justin Jackson, who is averaging 16.1 points per contest. Berry II, Isaiah Hicks (13.6 points per game) and Kennedy Meeks (13.4) all average in double figures.

The Tar Heels average more than seven steals per game, which sets up the transition game where the team excels.

Davidson has already beaten Missouri and Arizona State this season so it is no secret to facing off against major-conference foes. The Wildcats are led by by the duo of Jack Gibbs and Peyton Aldridge, who are combining to score more than 42 points per game.

Davidson has a good team but won’t be a match for North Carolina. The Tar Heels are too athletic for the Wildcats to win this one. However, it wouldn’t be a surprise if it’s close than initially thought.

Davidson has some good experience among its leaders as Gibbs and Aldridge are both upperclassmen. If they have good games the Wildcats should be able to cover a spread that could be in the double-digits.

The Tar Heels are extremely powerful and a big run could give them control, but Davidson will play well enough to hang tough before succumbing.

College Basketball Odds: North Carolina 91, Davidson 79
