For as good as the Florida State Seminoles have been this season, and they still have a shot at claiming a tie for the ACC regular season title, they can look back at their road struggles and kick themselves. FSU likely would have won the title outright if not for a poor 3-5 record away from Tallahassee during conference play. Now, the Noles have to play in one of the most devastating road venues in the entire country when they take on the Duke Blue Devils on Tuesday.

The Seminoles are near the top of the brutal ACC, holding down an 11-5 record and second place tie entering the final week of the regular season. But for FSU to take sole possession of second place, it’ll have to win on the road at Duke. Winning away from home has been surprisingly difficult for such a good team. FSU is just 3-5 on the road in ACC games and 2-5-1 ATS. The Noles escaped Clemson on Saturday with a 76-74 victory. They crushed Clemson by 48 points three weeks earlier at home.
While the Blue Devils would like to get some wins before the NCAA Tournament, Mike Krzyzewski knows the games that matter are a few weeks away. Duke doesn’t use a deep bench to begin with and going without Grayson Allen and Amile Jefferson certainly didn’t help. Allen played 29 minutes but was hampered by an existing ankle injury that caused him to miss nine of his 11 field goals in a loss to Syracuse. Allen sat out Saturday’s game and Jefferson played sparingly in a loss to Miami, which put Duke at 0-3 ATS in its last three games.
Injury Report
Without Allen, the team’s No. 3 scorer, and Jefferson limited in the second half, the Dookies were held to 32 points below their season average in a 55-50 loss to Miami on Saturday. The players that did see the court tried valiantly, but the lack of depth and scoring prevented the Blue Devils from their second straight loss.
Allen and Jefferson were inflicted with injuries and both will be a game time decision on Tuesday. Coach K knows he needs those two healthy to win and the games at the end of the regular season schedule and the ACC tournament are important. But Duke doesn’t stand a chance of advancing far in the Big Dance without those two and Krzyzewski must weigh the importance of playing them now or risking further injury.
Last Meeting
An 88-72 loss in Tallahassee on Jan. 10 started a run that saw the Blue Devils lose three of four games and raise many questions about the status of the program and its ability to compete in the ACC. You really don’t have to worry about Duke, but the Seminoles exploited their weaknesses and cruised to the easy cover win.
Taking advantage of their size and depth, Florida State wore down the Dookies and outscored them by a large margin in the paint. Duke was also hurt in that game by the loss of Jefferson, who was sidelined with a sore foot. The depth of FSU was too much in the second half when fatigue took over the Blue Devils. The Noles outscored Duke 16-4 in a decisive run during the middle of the second half.

The status of Jefferson and Allen will be a key in this one. Jefferson is desperately needed to give the Dookies an inside presence while Allen’s shot and ability to drive to the bucket have been limited with his sore ankle. The Blue Devils lost a pair of road games last week to unranked opponents and return to the best home court advantage in college basketball. Even shorthanded, the Dookies will feed off the excitement from the Cameron crazies.
Will that be enough to get them a victory? Just when we start to think the Blue Devils are done, they find a way to get a crucial win. Following that 1-3 stretch earlier, Duke rattled off seven consecutive wins, including huge ones over Notre Dame, North Carolina and Virginia. They’ll find a way to do it again on their home floor.
College Basketball Odds: Duke 70, Miami 66
