Don’t look now, but Jimmy Boeheim’s Syracuse Orange continue to climb up the ACC standings after rattling off five straight wins with a visit to Pitt set for the weekend. They’ll return home for this one to battle a Louisville Cardinals squad that just partook in an extremely physical Miami squad. These former Big East rivals have a ton of history with one another, and it’s the Cards that have held the recent upper hand in taking three of the last four skirmishes.

Louisville was on a roll heading into last Monday’s tilt in Charlottesville against Virginia. The undermanned Redbirds seemingly has the Cavaliers on the ropes through a half if play holding a 34-32 lead, but instead of administering the knockout blow in the second half, it got coldcocked and lost control of the game in the blink of an eye en route to getting pounded 71-55 as 6 point dogs. The defeat snapped their win streak at three straight and saw them suffer their loss against the line makers since January 11.
Through its first seven ACC tilts, the Orange played to 3-4 straight up and against the spread records. Since getting embarrassed in South Bend by Notre Dame, the Cuse has rattled off five straight wins and covers to propel itself back into the conference title race. Just one game off the pace heading into the weekend, the Orange will return home for this one where they’ve taken 14 of 16 overall and gone on to win and cover all six of its conference tilts.
Key Stat
28.5% - Syracuse is highly dependent upon being able to convert at a high clip from downtown. For the season, it ranks No. 28 in 3-point shooting with it averaging 9.0 makes per game. A figure that bumps up to 10.7 over its last three games. Louisville just so happens to rank No. 3 at defending the arc, so the Orange is going to have to find some success closer to the basket to come out of this one alive.
Player to Watch
Tyler Lydon – The big man was held in check versus Virginia the last time the Orange played in front of its hometown faithful. He did however go for 17 at Clemson a game later in his biggest scoring outburst since January 21. Syracuse is going to need him and Taurean Thompson to come up big in this one with the Cardinals defense likely giving their 3-point specialists some issues throughout the game’s entirety. Should Mangok Mathiang and Deng Adel not allow that to happen, mustering offense is going to be tough for the home team which will make it very tough to extend their win streak should it still be intact for this one.

Rick Pitino has had Jim Boeheim’s number of late. The Ville exploded in the second half of last year’s meeting outscoring the Orange 44-31 to pull out the 72-58 win and cover as 9 point chalk. Syracuse’s inability to sustain offense in the second stanza ended up costing it dearly, and I expect that unit to have another rough go of it in this rematch as well.
If you take the Virginia game out of the equation, Louisville has allowed 67 or less points in three of its last four games. While Syracuse has proven to be resilient over the course of its win streak battling back from big deficits to win on a number of occasions, I just don’t see it happening in this one against a Louisville team it doesn’t match up well against.
College Basketball Odds: Louisville 73, Syracuse 67
