College Basketball Odds - Oklahoma Sooners at Texas Longhorns Game Preview

Oklahoma-at-Texas-bm

Both teams are under .500 and unlikely to make a postseason tournament. However, both are aiming to finish strong and each side feels like it can win this game. The home court advantage may tip this game in Texas’ favor but it should be a competitive matchup.

Texas is 7-11 straight up and 10-7 against the spread this season. The Longhorns have played in ten home games and have covered in six of them. They have been favored nine times and covered four of those. Texas has been better as the underdog with an impressive 6-2 record against the spread when getting points.

Oklahoma is 8-9 straight up and 8-6-1 against the spread. The Sooners have played in four true road games and have covered two and pushed once in those matchups. Oklahoma is 3-4 against the spread as the favorite and 5-2-1 attempting to cover as the underdog.

Player to Watch

Jordan Woodard – The Oklahoma guard combined for 47 points in the team’s back-to-back wins over Texas Tech and No. 7 West Virginia on January 14th and January 18th. The senior’s last second layup lifted the Sooners to an 89-87 win over West Virginia last week in the team’s biggest victory of the season.

Woodard is the team’s leading scorer right now, averaging 17.7 points a game. He scored a season-high 28 points against Wichita State on December 10th.

Woodard will no doubt look to ride the wave of momentum into this week. He has averaged 18 points a game in his three games back from injury.

Suspension report

Texas suspended leading scorer Tevin Mack indefinitely two games ago and it’s unknown if he will return this season. That loss is a big blow to the Longhorns, who were struggling with him and will be worse without him.

Mack was averaging 14.8 points and 4.8 rebounds per game before the suspension. Texas has actually played pretty good without him, putting a scare into No. 10 West Virginia before losing by two and then falling by ten points to No. 6 Baylor.

It’s too soon to know if this is a case of addition by subtraction, or if the Longhorns will miss Mack’s scoring ability down the stretch. However, the suspension or a team’s leading scorer is rarely a good thing.

Texas has suffered four losses in a row, and it’s likely to go to five in a road matchup against Kansas next time out. This is the most winnable game the Longhorns have seen in a while, as their three opponents heading into this one have all been ranked in the top-10.

Texas is too far under .500 at this point to conceivably make the NCAA men’s basketball tournament or the NIT but wants to start playing better. However, the absence of Mack makes it difficult.

Oklahoma has a slightly better record but Texas is playing at home, so this one is intriguing. The Sooners are feeling good after the big upset of West Virginia, and expect the good vibes to keep rolling.

Mack’s absence can’t be overlooked as Oklahoma should be able to head into Austin and leave with the victory.
