College Basketball Odds - Oregon at Oregon State Game Preview

With a win over their arch-rival Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, the Oregon Ducks can clinch the PAC-12 regular season title and set themselves up for a potential No. 1 seed in March Madness. It’s been a tale of haves and have-nots in Oregon, with the Ducks atop the conference and looking like a national title contender, while the Beavers have been one of the worst teams in the country this season. An Oregon State win would be huge for a number of reasons, but is extremely unlikely.

Oregon has eeked games out on the road this season. The Ducks beat the Bay Area schools by a combined five points last week, and have just one double-digit road conference win in their last six games. However, all told, Oregon was a dazzling 13-4 ATS in PAC-12 play in 2017.

Oregon State has only managed one win in conference play this season, a one-point victory over Utah a couple weeks ago. The Beavers haven’t been poor against the number though, winning four of their last five ATS.

Last Meeting

The Beavers didn’t stand a chance when these teams met in Eugene in mid-January. Oregon State could only muster 13 first-half points because of a suffocating Oregon defensive performance and was down by 28 at halftime. The Ducks ended up nearly doubling up the Beavers in an 85-43 win that easily covered the number.

Turnovers were the name of the game in this one. Oregon was able to force Oregon State to commit 21 turnovers on the night, with the Beavers’ Drew Eubanks losing seven by himself. Eubanks was the only saving grace for OSU however, hitting 7 of 10 shots from the field to tally nearly half the team’s points. If you take out Eubanks’ performance, the rest of the Beavers went just 9 of 41 from the floor.

Player to Watch

Dillon Brooks has been a man on fire in recent weeks. Brooks has put up fantastic numbers each night since the Ducks’ loss at UCLA and has been the heart and soul of Oregon. He has hit at least 50 percent of his field goal attempts over his last five games and has hit the 20-point mark in all but one of those games.

There was a time when Oregon looked like a team lost at sea this season. Brooks wasn’t with the Ducks for the first few games, recovering from injury, and even after he was rushed back didn’t look 100 percent. We have seen the Brooks of old in recent weeks though and this team looks like it can knock off any in the country when he is on his game.

Oregon State has one of the most anemic offenses in the country. The Beavers are averaging just 63.3 PPG and are inefficient shooters and poor rebounders, but can heat up from behind the arc from time to time. That offense is going to have a real hard time cracking 60 points against an Oregon team that is hitting its stride and OSU will try to limit possessions and grind it out to win.

It is tough to win on the road in college basketball and can be even tougher to cover. This game is in Corvallis, but there is no reason to be optimistic about an Oregon State cover. The main hope for Beavers’ backers is that Oregon doesn’t take this one too seriously with the PAC-12 tournament and the NCAA Tournament on the horizon, but the Ducks are going to make their rivals pay.
