College Basketball Odds - Oregon vs. Georgetown Game Preview

2016-NCAAB-Oregon-vs.-Georgetown-Betting-Odds

It’s been a rough start to the season for the Georgetown Hoyas. The Hoyas are sitting at 1-2 after a stunning loss as a 22-point favorite to Arkansas State on Thursday night, a game in which they were down by 19 at the end of the first half. Things might not improve for Georgetown for a while as the Hoyas now head to the Maui Invitational where they will take on some of the best teams in the nation. Their first opponent will be last year’s PAC-12 champion, the Oregon Ducks.

The Hoyas have yet to cover a game this year. Not only that, but Georgetown lost outright as a favorite against both Arkansas State and Maryland. Each of the Hoyas games has finished short of the total, but that is little consolation to those that backed them to cover lofty spreads.

Oregon is 1-2 ATS through the first three games of the season and will fall from its current No. 5 ranking after a 17-point loss to Baylor. The Ducks recovered in time to defeat Valparaiso handily on Thursday, but the loss to Baylor still stings.

Coaching Angle

This is a match-up of coaches going in opposite directions. Dana Altman just signed a lengthy extension to stay a Duck after slowly building this team to a perennial PAC-12 contender and will try to get Oregon to the NCAA Tournament for the fifth straight season. Altman has built one of the deepest teams in the country and their up-tempo style coupled with a deep bench has helped them to knock off countless foes during his tenure in Eugene.

On the other side of the court, John Thompson III is in serious trouble following the loss to Arkansas State. This is Thompson’s 13th year at Georgetown and he is coming off his first ever losing season there. Things were supposed to be better this season, but the team is at a crossroads now. A long-distance trip can either bring his team together or crush their spirits and put this team in a tough spot going forward.

Player to Watch

With Dillon Brooks out for at least another month, Oregon has been looking for someone to step up and assume the alpha dog role on the team. Chris Boucher may have shown that he is ready to assume that position after a dominant performance against Valparaiso. Boucher led all scorers with 25 points on 9-12 shooting from the field and filled the stat sheet in other ways as well. He also tallied nine rebounds and picked up three blocks in his best performance of the short season.

Boucher has always had the talent, the trick is staying out of foul trouble. He shot better than 50 percent from the floor against Army and Baylor, but only played 24 minutes in each game due to fouls. He racked up four fouls in each of those outings and was unable to stay on the floor because of that.

Rodney Pryor has been on fire for Georgetown to start the season. Pryor is hitting over 60 percent of his shots from the floor and is 9-14 from behind the arc, but that hasn’t been enough for the Hoyas to win games.

Georgetown is struggling to play as a cohesive team, averaging the same amount of assists as turnovers in each game. Although it is shooting well, this team has to play a more cohesive style if it wants to win against Oregon.

With that being said, look for Georgetown to be undervalued after some poor performances here. The Hoyas are as talented as the Ducks and will be able to get the cover here.
