The Purdue Boilermakers are one win away from claiming an outright Big Ten regular season championship. Purdue has been solid against Big Ten opponents this season with a 13-4 mark and a 9-6-2 ATS record. They will be facing a team that is about to punch its first ever ticket to the dance, the Northwestern Wildcats. Mike Wilbon’s hopes have finally been fulfilled as Northwestern has scrapped together enough wins to leave no doubt that it will be in the tournament and Evanston is ready to show this team plenty of support on Sunday.

Purdue is a much different team on the road than it is at home. The Boilermakers are practically unbeatable on their home court, but things are different when they hit the road. They are just 2-6-1 ATS on the road this season and have abysmal losses to teams like Iowa and Nebraska away from West Lafayette. Under is 3-1 in their last four road affairs.
Northwestern has been an under bettor’s dream. The under is 17-8-2 in Northwestern games this season, despite very few high totals for this team. Under has now cashed in seven of the Wildcats’ last ten games and that’s because this team has only cracked 70 points once in that span.
Last Meeting
Northwestern’s Vic Law had a night to forget when these teams met at Purdue last month. Law is one of three Wildcats averaging more than 10 points per game on the season and is counted on to score buckets for a team without many playmakers. He had his worst game of the season against the Boilermakers however, managing just a single point and went 0-for-7 from the floor. His poor night was indicative of Northwestern’s performance overall with the Wildcats hitting just 35 percent of their field goals and 14.3 percent of their three-point attempts.
Purdue dominated this game in the paint with Caleb Swanigan eviscerating this defense. The Boilermakers’ forward finished the night with 24 points and 16 rebounds and his numbers helped Purdue beat Northwestern on the glass by 14 boards. Swanigan did end up fouling out, but still had a fantastic night.
Matchup to Watch
That rebounding battle will again be key when these teams meet on Sunday. Purdue is one of the better rebounding teams in the nation with guys like Swanigan, Isaac Haas, and Vince Edwards patrolling the rim. They are taller than pretty much every other team they face and that’s especially so for a Northwestern team without much size.
The Wildcats’ rebounding numbers aren’t terrible. Northwestern is averaging 36.8 boards per game, but a lot of that is a function of a defense that is great at forcing opposing teams to miss. This team holds opponents to less than 40 percent from the floor and that has given them more opportunities to snare loose balls.

Northwestern isn’t going to be ready to see Purdue coronated, but this team is at a major disadvantage. The Wildcats’ center is only 6’8 and he could only manage to grab three rebounds in 29 minutes of action the last time these teams met.
Barring a poor shooting performance from Purdue, it’s hard to imagine the Boilermakers losing. They are simply better than the Wildcats in most aspects and are playing for an outright championship, whereas Northwestern has essentially locked in a spot. Expect Purdue to get a statement victory and celebrate its first outright Big Ten championship since 1996 with a double digit victory.
College Basketball Odds: Purdue 80, Northwestern 65
