College Basketball Odds - Texas Longhorns at Iowa State Cyclones Game Preview

Texas-at-Iowa-State-bm

While Texas has the more prestigious program historically, Iowa State has been the better team this year. The Cyclones almost knocked off No. 2 Baylor last time out but must refocus quickly in order to not let this one go to waste.

This war on the floor will go down Saturday, January 7, 2017, at 9:15 p.m. ET at the Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.

We'll have NCAA basketball odds at BookMaker.eu available for this and every game on the college basketball Saturday schedule.

Iowa State is 9-3 straight up and 5-3 against the spread. The Cyclones have played four games at home this season and have covered in three of them. Iowa State will be the favorite and is 3-4 against the spread this year when giving up points.

Texas is 7-7 straight up and 7-6 against the spread on the year. The Longhorns have done well on the road this season, covering in both of their attempts. They have covered in two of four games as the underdog on the year.

Player to Watch

Jarrett Allen -- If Texas can hang around in this one, it may be on the strength of a big game from its freshman power forward. Allen is averaging 10.9 points, 7.4 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game and has gotten more involved as he’s gotten comfortable in the college game.

Allen has put up a double-double in three of his past five games and will aim to impact the game on both side of the floor. Texas struggles to score, so if Allen can contribute not just on the glass but in the points column, it would be a boost.

Key Stat

3. That’s the number of losses by two points or less for Iowa State on the year. The Cyclones have battled tough against some solid competition, losing 55-54 to Cincinnati, 73-71 to No. 11 ranked Gonzaga and 65-63 to No. 2 Baylor last time out.

The only blowout loss of the season for Iowa State this year came to rival Iowa. The Cyclones may have had some tough luck in close games, but that could even out by the end of the year. Iowa State has a plus-18.7 point-differential per game on the season, portending a competitive team in conference play.

Because of the close losses to ranked opponents, the Cyclones are still lacking enough signature wins so must keep playing well so their record looks good heading into March Madness. Since this one is at home, it’s critical to take care of business.

Iowa State isn’t one of the best teams in the country but it has shown its ability to play tough against ranked opponents. In order for the Cyclones to have a shot to make March Madness, they can’t afford to lose too many more close games.

This one shouldn’t come down to the final couple minutes, as the Cyclones have more talent. Monte Morris is averaging 14.6 points, 5.8 assists and 4.6 rebounds per contest and Texas will struggle slowing him down.

The Cyclones can’t afford a slip-up in a winnable home game against Texas and should be able to cruise to the win behind the play of Morris. Choose Iowa State both straight up and against the spread as the Longhorns’ poor season will continue in conference play.

College Basketball Odds: Iowa State 79, Texas 67
