The last time the Oklahoma Sooners won a game, it went into Morgantown and scored an 89-87 overtime victory against the West Virginia Mountaineers. The loss was a huge shock for those that backed the Huggy Bear’s kids who went off the board favored to win that game by 16.5 points. After just having their three game win streak snapped by Oklahoma State, the Mountaineers will invade Norman in an ornery mood looking to avenge that ghastly defeat.

With the Mounty’s going off the betting board favored in all five of their Big 12 road games, you can expect Esa Ahmad and his mates to be the prohibitive favorites in this spot as well; likely by a couple possessions. WVU checks in 3-2 straight up but just 2-3 against the spread in those contests with the two outright losses coming against Texas Tech in overtime and Kansas State. They lost those games by one and three points respectively.
For the season, OU checks in 9-10-1 against the spread. However, it’s been ugly for Lon Kruger’s kids as well as Sooner backers of late with the team amassing just one pointspread cover in its last five played games. It enters this tilt losers of three straight after getting bludgeoned at home by Florida ( +3 ), and following it up by handing one over to Oklahoma State in a game it led by three with 26 seconds remaining yet still failed to cover as 1.5 point underdogs. The most recent loss occurred in Lubbock where it lost by eight as 6 point pups.
Matchup to Watch
Jevon Carter and Jordan Woodard were men amongst boys in the first go round between these teams. The former went for a team and game-high 23 points on 9 of 18 shooting from the field. He also reeled in a game-high 11 rebounds to lead WVU to the 42-35 win in the battle for the boards. The latter went for 20 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds and 4 steals. Most importantly, he nailed the game winning lay-up with just 2.5 seconds remaining to catapult his team to the unlikely outright win and cover as decided underdogs.
These two are the heart and soul of each respective offense, and with each excelling in a big way in the first meeting, you can expect each to play large roles in the rematch as well.
Revenge Angle
West Virginia has logged just one win against the Sooners in the school’s last five overall meetings. Though the one triumph came in the Big 12 tournament semifinals last season, it still doesn’t mean much in the grand scheme of things. Even with Buddy Hield no longer around to torment them, Oklahoma still found a way to take it to one of their newest conference rivals. It gets even uglier when these teams lock horns in Norman where the Mountaineers have failed to win a single game through four tries since becoming a member of the conference back in 2013. It did however log a cover in last year’s visit, but lost each of the four games by an average of 11 points per game.

If you looked up the definition of choke artist in the dictionary, the most recent entry might just have a picture of the Sooners logo. This team has done nothing but burn its wagering supporters since defeating these same Mountaineers a couple week’s back. They couldn’t close against Iowa State at home immediately after that game even though it held multiple double-digit leads. I’m still having nightmares of how it botched the last 30 seconds versus the Cowboys, and then it teased its backers last Saturday night before allowing the Red Raiders to pull out the win and cover in the closing seconds.
Though history is working against the Mountaineers in this spot, I can’t help but look to back them in this revenge spot. OU put forth one of its best efforts of the season in that game, yet still only managed to win the game by a bucket in overtime. The Sooners played well beyond their means, while WVU struggled two games removed from upsetting the then No. 1 ranked Baylor Bears on their home floor. With Huggy Bears kids off a tough loss and seeking same season revenge, I expect them to put the screws to the Sooners this time around.
