The No. 16 ranked Wisconsin Badgers were unable to build off their big win over the Terps on Thursday night in Columbus, and because of it, likely kissed any chance of winning the Big Ten goodbye. The Michigan State Spartans never truly had a realistic shot to win the conference this season, but they’ve been nothing short of money when at home making this a huge test for a Badgers side limping into tourney time.

A game removed from pulling off a come-from-behind win over the Terps, Wiscy was simply atrocious in Columbus last time out in falling to the Buckeyes 83-73 as decided 7 point road favorites. The loss was the team’s third in four tries and dropped Greg Gard’s squad to 5-4 straight up and 3-5 against the spread when on the true road. The Badgers will partake in their final true road game of the season having amassed just one pointspread cover in their last six games.
Sparty wasted no time sweeping the season rivalry from the Cornhuskers on Thursday night getting out to a commanding 49-31 halftime lead before coasting to the 88-72 win and cover as 4 point home favorites. The effort was a welcome sight for Tom Izzo who saw his kids get rolled up and smoked at Purdue last time out. MSU has been wretched on the true road, but it’s been pretty darn good at home where it stands 13-2 overall as well as 7-1 straight up and against the spread as a B1G host.
Player to Watch
Bronson Koenig – It’s been a rough go for the Badgers sharpshooter over the last couple weeks. In his return from injury against the Terps, he only managed to knock down 4 of 11 shots and totaled nine points. Wisconsin was led by its big man in the win. Though the Badgers fell to the Buckeyes, the glimmer of light at the end of the tunnel was the play of the senior. He went for a game-high 27 points and knocked down 5 of 9 shots from beyond the arc. If he’s finally recovered from his nagging injury, the Badgers offense will be tough to stop with him stroking it from deep and both Ethan Happ and Nigel Hayes taking care of business down low.
Last Meeting
This could potentially be the only time these teams run up against one another this season. The recent rivalry has been owned by the Badgers with them scoring wins in three of the last four meetings. The last time it played the Spartans however, Michigan State cruised to the 69-57 win and cover as 9.5 point home favorites. The win moved Izzo’s kids to 9-0 straight up and 8-1 against the spread the last nine times they hosted this rivalry. The under cashed in six of those contests.

I get that Michigan State has been fantastic at home versus the Badgers and has been nearly impossible to beat as a host in B1G play. However, they’ve taken advantage of an extremely weak home schedule in a conference that’s very much so been down this season. Wisconsin and Purdue are by far the two best teams in this league. While the Badgers have been stinking up the joint of late, there’s no way I can pass the opportunity of grabbing points with them in this matchup should line makers give the nod to Sparty.
I liked what I saw from Koenig last time out, and if he’s truly back to being himself, I just don’t see the Spartans being able to contain the Badgers inside/outside game. Look for Wiscy to circle the wagons and come up with a huge end of season win over the Spartans to snap their nine-game losing streak in the Breslin Center.
