Both of Carolina’s blue bloods will be in action on Tuesday night and in the second part of a doubleheader we will see the North Carolina Tar Heels host the Wofford Terriers. North Carolina is looking to defend its national title and has looked solid to this point in the season. The Tar Heels got crushed by Michigan State, but have looked good against every other team on their schedule. Wofford is usually one of the better mid-majors in the country, but the Terriers have struggled this year. They are sitting at 7-4 yet did get a big win over Georgia Tech recently.
This war on the floor will go down Tuesday, December 20, 2017, at 9 p.m. ET at the Dean E. Smith Center in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. The game will be televised live on ESPN2. Wofford has looked much better from where it was at when the season started. The Terriers started the season 3-4 and were blown out by South Carolina, Cal, and Texas Tech, failing to cover the spread in any of the three. Things have gotten better though and they have won outright and covered as underdogs against both Coastal Carolina and Georgia Tech.
The Tar Heels have played some very good non-conference opponents this season and actually closed as underdogs on Sunday on the road against Tennessee. North Carolina was able to pull out a hard-fought win in that one, yet this team is not as good as the powerhouse we saw last season. They have still been good against the number though and are 4-0 ATS at home and all four of those home games finished over the total.
Matchup to Watch
Wofford isn’t a great rebounding team and it is going to have a hard time matching up against one of the best rebounding teams in the country. The Terriers average just 30.2 rebounds per game and that is one of the lowest figures you will find.
The problem isn’t necessarily a lack of size either. Wofford has some big bodies in Matthew Pegram, Cameron Jackson, and Keve Aluma, but Jackson is the only one that carries his weight as a rebounder. No one else on the team is averaging more than three rebounds per game and that’s concerning too.
North Carolina has five players averaging at least three rebounds per game and has been great in the blocks this season. Luke Maye leads the team with over 10 rebounds per game, but everyone contributes to haul down missed shots. That was one of the big reasons this team won it all last year and makes them dangerous again this year.
Player to Watch
Wofford’s offense runs through Fletcher Magee and the Tar Heels will be looking to stop him in this game.
Magee is having a banner season. His numbers are way up from what we saw last year and he seems to have developed a great shooting stroke in the offseason. He is averaging 23.8 PPG and is averaging more than double the points that any one of his teammates are.
Additionally, he is the most efficient player on the team, a rarity for a high-volume scorer. Magee is hitting 56.8 percent of his threes this year and sinking 59.4 percent of his field goals to boot.

Wofford is a team that loves to shoot the three. The Terriers are averaging 25 three-point attempts a game and this team is not afraid to go bombs away against anyone. That means North Carolina has to play solid perimeter defense against this team in order to win. The Tar Heels will have a big advantage on the glass and need to just stop the Terriers’ shooters. They are one of the worst teams at defending the three in the country though and that will lead to a Wofford cover.
