SERIES RECAP
Game 3 may have been the Bismack Biyombo show, but Game 4 was the tale of the guards for Toronto. Kyle Lowry and DeMar DeRozan picked a great time to both have great games and were able to hold off a massive Cleveland charge in the second half. The Raptors held a 16 point lead going into halftime, but Cleveland clawed back and Toronto needed DeRozan and Lowry to seal the game at the end.
KEY MATCHUP
How about Toronto’s Big Three? Jonas Valanciunas was active for Game 4 but ended up not playing and again it was Bismack Biyombo filling his role with DeRozan and Lowry. Biyombo was the only player for either team that finished with double digits in rebounds and his presence was also felt with three blocks on the night. The Raptors don’t have much outside of those three plus Valanciunas, so it’s critical that they play well for Toronto to win.
J.R. Smith is about as feast or famine as it gets in the NBA and after a solid Game 3, he shot poorly in Game 4. Smith gets a lot of good looks while on the floor with LeBron James and Kyrie Irving, but he only hit a quarter of his shots from the field Monday night. His problems underscored Cleveland’s issues from three-point range as the Cavs shot an insane 41 three-pointers and only knocked down 13 of them.
KEY STATS & TRENDS
Kyle Lowry picked a good time to finally have a great game this postseason and has been a much different player at home than on the road. After knocking down 70 percent of his shots en route to a game-high 35 points in Game 4, Lowry’s home/road splits are staggering over his last five. At home, Lowry is hitting 59 percent of his threes and over 60 percent of his shots from the floor but on the road he is hitting just 29 percent of his field goal attempts and is just 1-15 from three.
In contrast to Lowry, DeMar DeRozan has been extremely consistent over his past few outings. DeRozan has scored at least 20 points in six of his last seven games and knows his role better than anyone. He is a stone cold shooter first and foremost and anything else he does on the floor is a plus.
There are major questions and second guessing over why Tyronn Lue didn’t play Kevin Love at all in the fourth quarter, opting instead to go for Channing Frye. Love struggled from the floor in Toronto, hitting just 5-23 from the field at the Air Canada Centre, but his rebounding presence and playmaking ability make him a better option than Frye.
His two years with the Cavaliers has been perplexing as he continually moves in and out of the doghouse.
Cleveland did get good news with Kyrie Irving’s play, even though he was a little loose with the ball and committed four turnovers. Following a great first two outings in Cleveland, Irving was awful in Game 3 and it looked like he was injured and may again miss time. He returned in Game 4 and looked like the Irving we had seen earlier in the series, but it wasn’t enough for Cleveland to get the win.
