The Golden Globe Awards will kick off the 2020 award season by highlighting the best that film and television had to offer in 2019. The television bracket is more wide open than it has been in recent years with Game of Thrones coming to an end, and the film awards have been crashed by Netflix. Netflix is responsible for two of the three most nominated films in Marriage Story and The Irishman, proving that they can create excellent original content.

Martin Scorsese has been trying to develop The Irishman for years, and many critics believe it?s been worth the wait. This film has already been heralded as a masterpiece and among Scorsese?s best, so it?s the odds-on favorite to be named the best drama of the year.

Scorsese has been named Best Director three times by the Golden Globe Awards, and it?s a good bet that he?ll win the award this time too. The only film that could potentially top The Irishman in my eyes is 1917. I have a soft spot for war epics, and they generally do well at award shows since there is already a historic angle to use. The film was directed and produced by another favored son in Sam Mendes, and it was told to Mendes by his grandfather. That gives the film a little extra edge that could push it over the top.

This is the biggest lock on the board. Phoenix was phenomenal in Joker, and many are still raving about his performance. The villain has been a fan favorite for decades, and we saw both Jack Nicholson and Heath Ledger earn awards for their reprisals of the character.

Adam Driver will eventually have his moment in the sun, but this isn?t the time for him, and everyone else is too much of a longshot. Phoenix was just too good as the Joker, and he?ll be rewarded.

This is the category to bet a longshot. The ?Me Too? movement has had a big impact in Hollywood, and that?s why we could see an upset. The most popular television show in the history of HBO has come to an end, and many are expecting it to have a big night on September 22. Game of Thrones received more nominations than any other show with 32 total nominations from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, and the show is likely to win more categories than any of its competitors. That has led to speculation on just how many Emmys we will see Game of Thrones win six weeks from now.

How Many Emmys Will Game of Thrones Win in 2019?

Initially, the line for this prop was 8.5, but Game of Thrones fervor led to the oddsmakers pushing it to 9.5 shortly after it was released. The hit show has been nominated for three major awards and 11 minor awards for the Emmys proper and boasts 18 nominations for the Creative Arts Emmys, yet despite the move there is plenty of reason to think that under is the best play here.

Of the three major awards, Game of Thrones is only projected to win one per the entertainment betting odds. Game of Thrones is a considerable favorite to win Outstanding Drama Series after winning this award for each of its previous three seasons. The show was named the best Drama Series in 2015, 2016, and 2018, and the only reason Game of Thrones didn?t win in 2017 was due to a long production break.

That?s good news for over bettors, but the predictions with regards to the other two major categories that Game of Thrones have been nominated for are not.

Kit Harrington was nominated as Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series for his role as Jon Snow, but he is the fifth favorite on the board. Four other actors have been given a significantly better chance of taking home the title, and his 8-1 odds are likely inflated just because he is affiliated with Game of Thrones. It?s very unlikely that Harrington wins this award.

Emilia Clarke has a little better chance of being named Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series. Her role as Daenerys Targaryen was very memorable, even though many were disappointed with the fate of her character over the show?s final two episodes. She is a still a significant underdog to Sandra Oh though as Oh is a -700 favorite to win the award for her role in Killing Eve.

An incredible seven actors and actresses from Game of Thrones were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor or Actress. Alfie Allen, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Peter Dinklage were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actor, and Gwendoline Christie, Lena Headey, Sophie Turner, and Maisie Williams were nominated for Outstanding Supporting Actress. It?s very likely that Game of Thrones wins both categories with so many nominees, but that would lead to just three wins.

That inner-show cannibalism can be seen in other categories too. Three different episodes of the final season of Game of Thrones were nominated for Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series, and there are multiple nominees in select categories for the Creative Arts Emmys too.

Additionally, with so many nominees, there could be some exhaustion. The Emmys might not want to follow in the footsteps of what the Oscars did with The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King in 2004 and give it so many awards, spreading the wealth among many worth contenders. That?s been a growing theme we?ve seen at the awards shows in recent years.

It may be hard to go against the grain with such a popular show, but it?s the right call. Game of Thrones will surely have a good day but predicting the show to win 10 Emmys or more is a bit much. Take the under for these Game of Thrones betting odds.
