Hosted this year by 39-year-old "kid" Blake Shelton, the "Kids Choice Awards" do at least always deliver with regard to conveying where the kids are at and who and what they're loving, since it is voted on by kids themselves. The hosts, however, are increasingly questionable.
Key nominations this year include:
FAVORITE TV SHOW
Austin & Ally
Girl Meets World
Henry Danger
Jessie
Lab Rats: Bionic Island
The Thundermans
This is actually a tough one to call. "Girl Meets World" has an active social media presence and strong fan-base, but "Austin & Ally" does too - plus laughs. Furthermore, "A&A" just closed up shop for good, which makes it a front-runner and then some.
FAVORITE FAMILY TV SHOW
Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Modern Family
Once Upon a Time
The Big Bang Theory
The Flash
The Muppets
Equally tough to call, I'd like to see "The Flash" nab this one - and it can - but "The Muppets" could prove difficult to beat. "Modern Family" won here last year, and could have a repeat victory too. Mix all of that together and what have you got? Rock, paper, scissors this one.
FAVORITE MALE TV STAR – KIDS’ SHOW
Aidan Gallagher – Nicky Harper,Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn
Casey Simpson – Ricky Harper,Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn
Jace Norman – Henry Hart,Henry Danger
Jack Griffo – Max Thunderman,The Thundermans
Ross Lynch – Austin Moon,Austin & Ally
Tyrel Jackson Williams – Leo Dooley,Lab Rats: Bionic Island
Lynch is probably a shoo-in, what with "A&A" gone forever. Otherwise it'd be Gallagher versus Simpson, and I don't see fans dividing two stars of the same show.
FAVORITE MALE TV STAR – FAMILY SHOW
Anthony Anderson – Andre ’Dre’ Johnson,Black-ish
Ben McKenzie – James Gordon,Gotham
Grant Gustin – Barry Allen,The Flash
Jim Parsons – Sheldon Cooper,The Big Bang Theory
Johnny Galecki – Leonard Hofstadter,The Big Bang Theory
Rico Rodriguez – Manny Delgado,Modern Family
Rodriguez could represent "Modern," but Gustin is picking up steam, like his TV superhero namesake. Then again, I could be projecting with "The Flash," as being an award winner here could still be a year or two off; the show isn't going anywhere. Anderson is coming around the bend, too, for that matter. "Black-ish" has major buzz. As a betting man I hate to say that this is another toss-up.
FAVORITE FEMALE TV STAR – KIDS’ SHOW
Debby Ryan – Jessie Prescott,Jessie
Dove Cameron – Liv Rooney,Liv and Maddie
Kira Kosarin – Phoebe Thunderman,The Thundermans
Laura Marano – Ally Dawson,Austin & Ally
Lizzy Greene – Dawn Harper,Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn
Zendaya – K.C. Cooper,K.C. Undercover
Is it Ryan or Marano for the win, because "Jessie" just wrapped for good, too. My money is on the former as opposed to the latter.
FAVORITE FEMALE TV STAR – FAMILY SHOW
Chloe Bennet – Daisy “Skye” Johnson,Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Jennifer Morrison – Emma Swan,Once Upon a Time
Kaley Cuoco – Penny Hofstadter,The Big Bang Theory
Ming-Na Wen – Melinda May,Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Sarah Hyland – Haley Dunphy,Modern Family
Sofia Vergara – Gloria Delgado-Pritchett,Modern Family
My money is on Bennet, believe it or not. Vergara could be a contender, especially because "Kids" has given "Modern" love in the past, but I'm banking on Bennett becoming a big star. Soon.
FAVORITE TALENT COMPETITION SHOW
America’s Got Talent
American Idol
Dance Moms
Dancing with the Stars
The Voice
"Idol" looks like a lock thanks to it being in its final season as of this writing. But that'd also still make it eligible for next year. I don't see this going elsewhere though, so I'd bank on "Idol."
FAVORITE CARTOON
ALVINNN!!! and The Chipmunks
Gravity Falls
Ninjago
Phineas & Ferb
SpongeBob SquarePants
Steven Universe
Teen Titans Go!
The Amazing World of Gumball
Toss-up between "Alvin" and "Titans" - two shows, interestingly, boasting characters created half a century ago. Could "SpongeBob" prove a spoiler? Sure. I mean, it's SpongeBob. But if I were betting on this one I'd go with "Titans."
FAVORITE MOVIE
Ant-Man
Avengers: Age of Ultron
Cinderella
Daddy’s Home
Jurassic World
Pitch Perfect 2
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2
"Perfect" could but "Star Wars" might. And if "Star Wars" takes this I see it having a good night all the way around. If "Pitch" does then the JJ Abrams-produced sequel may go home completely empty-handed.
FAVORITE MOVIE ACTOR
Chris Evans – Steve Rogers/Captain America,Avengers: Age of Ultron
Chris Hemsworth – Thor,Avengers: Age of Ultron
Chris Pratt – Owen,Jurassic World
John Boyega – Finn,Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Robert Downey Jr. – Tony Stark/Iron Man,Avengers: Age of Ultron
Will Ferrell – Brad Whitaker,Daddy’s Home
Newcomer Boyega could steal this. If he has any competition I see it - believe it or not - in the form of the formidable Ferrell.
FAVORITE MOVIE ACTRESS
Anna Kendrick – Beca,Pitch Perfect 2
Daisy Ridley – Rey,Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Jennifer Lawrence – Katniss Everdeen,The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 2
Lily James – Cinderella,Cinderella
Rebel Wilson – Fat Amy,Pitch Perfect 2
Scarlett Johansson – Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow,Avengers: Age of Ultron
Newcomer Ridley could pull same as Boyega, but Wilson is a "Kids" fave - and past host. I'd actually go with the "Pitch Perfect 2" star.
FAVORITE ANIMATED MOVIE
Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip
Home
Hotel Transylvania 2
Inside Out
Minions
The Peanuts Movie
Selena Gomez and perennial "Kids" fave Adam Sandler should seal a win with "Transylvania." That simple.
FAVORITE MUSIC GROUP
Fall Out Boy
Fifth Harmony
Imagine Dragons
Maroon 5
One Direction
Pentatonix
I see Pentatonix with an upset here. That's a long-shot, I admit, but I am factoring in their rabid fan-base and a huge tour last year supporting Kelly Clarkson as signs of a potential win. If not them, who? One Direction? Okay - maybe.
FAVORITE MALE SINGER
Blake Shelton
Drake
Ed Sheeran
Justin Bieber
Nick Jonas
The Weeknd
Shelton might have to watch Beebs make an acceptance speech. And if not him, then maybe Jonas, whose upcoming tour with Demi Lovato has the kids watching "Kids" already in line to buy tickets.
FAVORITE FEMALE SINGER
Adele
Ariana Grande
Meghan Trainor
Nicki Minaj
Selena Gomez
Taylor Swift
Could be Swift, could be Adele, but I think it's going to be Grande, hot off the release of her new CD just 24 hours prior. (Yep, it goes on sale Friday.)
FAVORITE SONG OF THE YEAR
“Bad Blood” (feat. Kendrick Lamar) – Taylor Swift
“Can’t Feel My Face” – The Weeknd
“Hello” – Adele
“Hotline Bling” – Drake
“Thinking Out Loud” – Ed Sheeran
“What Do You Mean?” – Justin Bieber
The Weeknd or Adele. I think this one is going to be totally neck-and-neck.
