You'd think the Billboard Music Awards were the easiest awards to bet on. After all, you have Billboard itself to refer to, as far as how a certain song performed on the charts, the artist, the album, etc. (does anyone know what I mean by the word "album?").
So, you just do your homework, and place your bets accordingly. But there are certain mitigating circumstances that can affect the outcome. Units moved versus weeks on chart and so on.
That said, let's take a look at some of the categories.
TOP ARTIST
Ariana Grande
One Direction
Katy Perry
Sam Smith
Taylor Swift
This one is really a toss-up between Swift and Smith. The former is a Billboard darling and the latter the critics latest wunderkind. So, who walks away with it? I'd say Smith, but I wouldn't rule Grande out for a possible upset.
TOP NEW ARTIST
5 Seconds of Summer
Iggy Azalea
Hozier
Sam Smith
Meghan Trainor
Smith is a front-runner here, too, but Trainor also had two of the biggest hits of the year, plus they were uptempo...and upbeat. "All About That Bass" could seal this for her.
TOP MALE ARTIST
Drake
Pharrell Williams
Ed Sheeran
Sam Smith
Justin Timberlake
Again I am compelled to single Smith out, but Sheeran could make a mad dash for the finish line.
TOP FEMALE ARTIST
Iggy Azalea
Ariana Grande
Katy Perry
Taylor Swift
Meghan Trainor
Trainor's got the songs, but Grande has the pipes. And a ferocious, voracious fan base that not only worships her, but misses her hit TV series "Sam & Cat."
TOP RAP ARTIST
Iggy Azalea
J. Cole
Drake
Nicki Minaj
Rae Sremmurd
Azalea should be easy money here.
TOP COUNTRY ARTIST
Jason Aldean
Luke Bryan
Florida Georgia Line
Brantley Gilbert
Blake Shelton
Bryan will gallop away with this one.
TOP ROCK ARTIST
Bastille
Coldplay
Fall Out Boy
Hozier
Lorde
Lorde even being in the running is curious to me, and further proof Billboard does not know how to categorize well, even while they keep adding new ones. I'd say Fall Out Boy.
OP RAP ALBUM
J. Cole, 2014 Forest Hills Drive
Drake, If You're Reading This It's Too Late
Nicki Minaj, The Pinkprint
Iggy Azalea, The New Classic
Eminem, The Marshall Mathers LP 2
Azalea here, with an eye (and an ear) out for Drake.
TOP COUNTRY ALBUM
Jason Aldean, Old Boots, New Dirt
Garth Brooks, Man Against Machine
Luke Bryan, Crash My Party
Brantley Gilbert, Just As I Am
Miranda Lambert, Platinum
Comes down to Aldean versus Bryan - a far better bout that Pacquaio/Mayweather.
TOP ROCK ALBUM
AC/DC, Rock or Bust
The Black Keys, Turn Blue
Coldplay, Ghost Stories
Hozier, Hozier
Lorde, Pure Heroine
It should go to AC/DC (Angus must be aghast at being in the same category as Lorde), but that doesn't mean it will.
TOP HOT 100 SONG
Iggy Azalea feat. Charli XCX, "Fancy"
John Legend, "All of Me"
Sam Smith, "Stay With Me"
Taylor Swift, "Shake It Off"
Meghan Trainor, "All About That Bass"
"Bass," with "Fancy" a close runner-up.
