For 25 minutes last night, we actually had a traditional presidential debate where both Donald Trump and Hillary Clinton focused on the issues at hand. The two sparred over gun rights and Roe vs. Wade and looked like candidates that we would typically see from the Republican Party and the Democratic Party. However, once the topic switched to immigration, it was back to the rancorous debates that we had seen in the past and the debate once again went off the rails. Clinton won the debate in the instant reaction, but how that plays in the polls remains to be seen.

TRUMP NEEDED A WIN LAST NIGHT
Trump’s numbers have been in a tailspin since the first debate as scandal after scandal has plagued him and caused his support to drop. He has fought with Jeff Flake, John McCain and Paul Ryan among others, and that has hurt him where it matters most, among Republican voters.
It was already very hard to see a way in which Trump can win the election, but he likely alienated more of the Republican base that he needed to shore the support of last night. Trump was polling in the 70s with self-identified Republicans and in a campaign that has done very little to appeal to voters outside the base, party members take on an even greater importance.
To be fair Trump had his best debate performance yet tonight. He largely stuck to key talking points, but two major errors are likely going to put him in a hole he can’t recover from.
QUESTIONING THE VALIDITY OF AN ELECTION
Trump has done something this past week that no presidential candidate has ever done before, claim that an election is rigged. Moderator Chris Wallace directly asked him about the statements he had been making in this regard at his rallies and Trump shockingly didn’t back down from this rhetoric.
Never in the history of American politics have we seen something like this before. Never has a candidate openly questioned whether or not an election is fair and the media reaction immediately following the debate was intense.
Multiple networks slammed Trump for his claims and were mystified as to why he would possibly claim that the elections were rigged. It is potentially dangerous and harmful for a major party candidate to make statements like these as some of his supporters will now undoubtedly think that the system is unjust and even scarier, unlawful.
This tactic also doesn’t make sense because it leads supporters of the candidate who is lobbing the accusation to stay at home instead of going out to vote. It can suppress his own turnout and is a puzzling move when he needs all the help he can get.
“SUCH A NASTY WOMAN”
The other main takeaway from this debate is going to be Trump’s interjection that Hillary is “…a nasty woman”. In case Trump hasn’t had enough to worry about with female voters, he is continuing to throw gasoline on the dumpster fire that is this part of his campaign.
Trump has categorically denied any instance of wrongdoing on his part, but nine different women have come forward with stories about Trump’s behavior towards them since the last debate and his treatment of them has come under considerable fire. At rallies, he has inferred that he couldn’t do what he is accused of because the accuser was unattractive or worse and that does not help him with half the population.
Women are abandoning Trump in droves and this statement last night will only hasten the flight. Multiple Republican female voices on Twitter have publicly stated that they cannot support Trump any longer and his support among Republican women is plummeting. It’s hard to fathom an instance where he can win women back over to his side and at this point he is likely to get routed on Election Day.
