The final four vocalists —Barrett Baber and Emily Ann Roberts of Team Blake, Jordan Smith of Team Adam and Jeffery Austin of Team Gwen — each were tasked with singing three songs on Monday night in hopes of giving viewers a good long look before casting their votes for a winner.
Pharrell showed up - seemingly - to support his fellow judges (oh, OK - the contestants too!), as he didn't have a vocalist going into finals.
Jordan Smith went in with the strongest numbers, -300 odds here on BookMaker.eu. Not far behind (yet far enough behind) was Jeffery Austin at +300. Emily Ann Roberts was holding it down at +800, and Barrett Baber was right there at +1000.
Smith kicked off the evening with “Climb Every Mountain” from “The Sound of Music,” backed by violins and a gospel choir. He earned a standing ovation from all four coaches.
Though only 17, Emily Ann Roberts came off as a tried and true traditional country singer and may well pull off the career that coach Blake Shelton has predicted for her - or something close to the success Danielle Bradberry (sic) has had. She looked and sounded strongon the Christmas song “Blue Christmas.”
Baber and Shelton’s “throwback” take on Glen Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy” may have shown off Shelton more than Baber, but the 35-year-old former high school teacher from Arkansas righted his ship and sailed strong with a confident performance of Thomas Rhett’s “Die a Happy Man.”
Austin gained solid footing as he sang “O Holy Night,” which he said was one of his grandparents’ favorite Christmas songs, and finished strong.
All this being said, it played out as follows:
Fourth Place Jeffery Austin
Third Place Barrett Baber
Second Place Emily Ann Roberts
Season 9 Winner Jordan Smith
The biggest surprise at the finishing line of Season 9 is not who won, but that Stefani's horse finished so poorly in the race. I expected Austin to be right up there with Smith.
Anyway, Smith won the thing, and it's no surprise, really.
Right from the Season 9 premiere — when Adam declared Jordan“the most important person that’s ever been on this show” after he belted a Blind Audition about a party girl and her blackout drinking habit — he has been strong, and the "vibe" has been there.
Let's get back to Austin, though. His finale number with Tori Kelly, a rousing, perfectly toned “Hollow,” was the stuff of big iTunes sales. We shall see.
