Tuesday's Knockout Round-Up:
Korin Bukowski vs. Summer Schappell ( Team Gwen ): Stefani said she paired these two because they were both left-of-center storytellers. Bukowski, whom Stefani talked into performing without her geeky eyeglasses, brought a strong, even warm tone to Kodaline’s “All I Want,” while Schappell showed off her sass with Little Big Town’s “Little White Church.” Stefani said she connected to each singer for entirely different reasons and felt “sick” about having to choose, but ultimately, she managed to declare Bukowski the winner, saying she thought she could do more with her. When Levine reassured Stefani, who was as sad to see Schappell go as she was delighted to see Bukowski stay, that she had “made the right choice, 100%,” she seemed genuinely relieved. The camaraderie of the judges is much more fun to take in than the playful rivalries.
Dustin Christensen vs. Keith Semple ( Team Adam ): Levine matched up Christensen and Semple, each of whom he said had a “rock-and-roll spirit.” Christensen showed off his charisma on Zac Brown Band’s “Free,” while Semple tried to plumb his soulful depths for Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is.” Even though both singers had shown “growth,” the Maroon 5 singer said, Semple’s song choice was a “ballsy move,” like Babe Ruth calling his spot for his home run.
Darius Scott vs. Morgan Frazier ( Team Pharrell ): Frazier, whom Williams had stolen from Shelton in the battles, has found a home with the successful producer ( and successful singer in his own right ). That said, Scott did his own thing with George Benson’s “On Broadway,” singing so many runs the coaches compared his sound to that of "two saxophones with extra notes.” Frazier, though, really connected to Eli Young Band’s “Even If It Breaks Your Heart,” turning it into a Springsteen-esque anthem. Both singers received standing ovations.
There to help the artists evolve and discover their potential was Rihanna ( who I maintain will show up as a judge one season ), and she proved quite helpful in rehearsals.
Rihanna encouraged Bukowski to just lean into her weird side and be herself instead of holding back, resulting in the kid's personal best performance so far in the competition. In other words: Rihanna has the magic touch.
