Sent to safety pretty much right out of the gate, by erstwhile host Carson Daly, in chronological order:
Hannah Huston
Bryan Bautista
Adam Wakefield
Laith Al-Saadi
Mary Sarah
Alisan Porter
Shalyah Fearing
Team Pharrell's Huston was gracious, saying, “It’s just really humbling to be here and continue growing and doing exactly what I love.” she did a classic double take when her name was announced. She was probably that Adam and Laith weren't among the first announced, since they both had songs in the iTunes top 10 singles chart.
XTina's Bryan Bautista added,“The best experience was coming back from battle rounds when all four coaches were standing up…That’s when it felt like this was real.” Pulling that off a second time could score you a win, dude.
Mom, and also from Team XTina, Alisan Porter said, “There’s a fire inside of me, and I couldn’t ignore that. And it’s such an honor for me to stand here for all moms that have dreams and desires.” They made Porter sweat it out a bit, which was kind of predictable, especially as she remains the front-runner.
Preening and posturing aside, this left Paxton Ingram and Nick Hagelin in the bottom two to duke it out for that last remaining semifinals ticket.
And while Paxton’s first Whitney Houston performance this week was what got him into this situation in the first place, he doubled down with another re-arrangement of one of her hitswhile Nick Hagelin coasted with a highly accessible Eric Clapton hit.
Ingram took the stage first in this "Save Me" round, singing Sam Smith’s version of “ How Will I Know” by Whitney Houston, to be exact. It proved a good choice for Ingram, who is quite the departure for Shelton, especially this far into a season. He gave an emotional and vocally impressive performance that played to his strengths. “That is the way to sing to save yourself,” Pharrell said, adding that Ingram showed no fear.
Hagelin took the stage next to sing “Change The World” by Eric Clapton . He came off as over-produced and inauthentic, especially following Ingram. For the second week in a row, his vocals just didn’t sound that strong in this inarguably critical moment.
As they headed into commercial, the instant save results were shown in real time. Nick had a slight lead over Paxton, but it was just 51% to 49%. Sure enough, upon returning from commercials it was Ingram advancing to the semifinal, while Hagelin finally went home for the second time.
