Three former Voice contestants who didn’t win their seasons (Vicci Martinez, Avery Wilson, and Jacquie Lee, plus last season’s winner, Craig Wayne Boyd) were brought around for performances this week, talking new albums, new record deals, and so on.
Juliet Simms, who didn't win her season but should have, remains nowhere to be found. This is someone who should be a huge superstar. But such is the life of a reality TV show contestant/winner.
On Monday night's tribute to Mother's Day, front-runner Sawyer Fredericks chose a little-known tune written by May Erlewine called "Shine On." He gave a great importance but song selection is so key on these competitions, and familiarity sometimes even more so.
"This song is from my childhood," Fredericks said on Monday's episode, referencing the farm where he grew up. "I've always loved it. I know it means a lot to my mother." Definitely recovered there!
When he performed the Commitments' version of "Take Me to the River" on the same episode, even judge Blake Shelton favored him over Team Blake's own Meghan Linsey: "Everyone at home... do what feels right... vote for this guy."
Fredericks was the first to advance on Tuesday, followed by Linsey, Team Pharrell's Koryn Hawthorne and Davis.
America Saved (in increasingly obvious iTunes order):
TEAM PHARRELL: Sawyer Fredericks
TEAM BLAKE: Meghan Linsey
TEAM PHARRELL: Koryn Hawthorne
TEAM ADAM: Joshua Davis
The Bottom 2 Performed:
TEAM CHRISTINA:
Xtina is closing in on her first potential win as a judge. Xtina's odds of having the winner this season are +240 on BookMaker. India Carney did a Pink song, which probably made a lot of sense to the audience, while Kimberly Nichole tackled The White Stripes, which probably didn't. Hence...
INSTANT SAVE: India Carney
Yep, that's it for Nichole. Here anyway. She took risks with both her song selections on Monday’s Top 6 performance show, and even before the votes rolled in, I suspected that those risks had not paid off. She squandered the opportunity to give a hard tug at the heartstrings (a la Fredericks) in her mom dedication, unsentimentally floating through Tom Petty’s “Free Fallin,’” which seemed a waste, too, considering the fact that her energy level is not only one of her strengths, but what has set her apart from the rest of the hopefuls this season.
The five remaining "artists" are a scattershot lot. Sawyer Fredericks has held the top spot for a while now, but would ultimately be another Craig What's-His-Name. Then again, America doesn't care about a year from now...they care about NOW. Fredericks is sitting pretty at -145.
Carney has odds of +480, with Meghan Linsey not far behind at +800. From there Koryn and Joshua are splitting odds of +1200.
But this season may be all about America wanting a new winner in the judge department, which is why an Aguilera bet might be good money, in my opinion. Pharrell is the favorite at -140, with Shelton at +400 and Levine a long way's off at +1000.
