Hot off "Restaurant Wars" and Phillip (finally?) being eliminated, he was off to Last Chance Kitchen to take on Jason, who beat Chad the week before.
And then came:
QUICKFIRE CHALLENGE –The chefs were in Oakland where Padma happened to show up with guest judge MC Hammer. I haven't seen him since "The Surreal Life" with Corey Feldman! Remember that?
For this challenge, they had to come up with their own rap name and then create a dish inspired by that name. Promising, right? Not necessarily.
RESULTS –Padma and MC tasted all the dishes and the least favorites came from Amar, Marjorie and Kwame. The favorites from Carl, Isaac and Karen. The winner of this Quickfire Challenge was Isaac, snapping up immunity.
ELIMINATION CHALLENGE –The chefs had to create a dish that "evoked a culinary period in history." Their dish had to be inspired by the culture, food trends, flavors and ingredients of that era. For the eras, they picked:
- Isaac –Viking Age
- Carl –Ancient Greece
- Amar –Paris
- Marjorie –Ancient India
- Kwame –Beijing
- Jeremy –San Francisco/Gold Rush
- Karen –Empire of Japan
They got two hours to do research at the San Francisco Library to help them learn more about their given era. The chefs did their research in the library and some were happy with what they found while others totally struggled.
TASTING TIME–
- Carl –They really enjoyed the dish.
- Marjorie –They liked the balance of spice to heat. The bread was not soft though and it tasted like something fried.
- Isaac –They said he looked like a Viking. Method cooking? The texture and flavor of the venison was deemed perfect.
- Kwame –It had crunch and spice. Duck was nicely cooked, and it was noted that he was using modern techniques, coupled with a depth to the knowledge. (Kwame for the win in the long run, if you ask me.)
- Jeremy –It was considered "not eating like a chowder, but like a sauce."
- Karen –The broth felt more Chinese than Japanese.
- Amar –He nailed it and the sweet bread rocked.
JUDGES’ TABLE –The judges discussed all of the dishes and they said nice job across the board. Kwame, Amar and Carl had the favorite dishes of the night. They discussed all the dishes and the judges really loved all of them, but it was Amar winning this challenge, thereby getting his first win of the season.
The least favorite dishes of the night came from Karen, Marjorie and Jeremy. The losing chef was Karen.
