The Miami Hurricanes have yearned for that signature win that gets their program turned around.
They've got their shot on Saturday against the Clemson Tigers, who could feel tested due to the fact that this is just their second road game of the season.
WHEN THE CLEMSON TIGERS HAVE THE BALL
Deshaun Watson wasn't good in his first road game of the year, going just 21-of-30 for 199 yards with two TDs and two picks against Louisville, but there are a couple things to note about that game.
First off, the Cardinals are significantly better than a 2-4 record suggests. Secondly, that game came on the road on a short week, and anytime you can get a conference win on the road with just a couple days notice, it's a good win.
It's going to be tough for Miami to slow this Clemson offense down. It's not that this team is all that explosive – 448.5 yards per game isn't all that impressive for a Top 5 team. It's that the Tigers just don't make mistakes. They've completed 68.2 percent of their passes to date, they don't lose all that many fumbles, and they don't kill themselves with penalties.
The Hurricanes have had problems with similar teams. Look at what Florida State was able to do against this defense with 539 yards. Or Nebraska's comeback. Or Cincinnati's fast-paced onslaught.
The Canes can be had on this side of the ball, and live bettors need to be aware of it.
WHEN THE MIAMI HURRICANES HAVE THE BALL
Brad Kaaya and Joseph Yearby are awesome. The rest of this Miami offense? Not so much.
Kaaya has only thrown one pick on 219 pass attempts, and he has no choice but to make sure he hangs onto the football in this game if he is going to ultimately pull off this upset.
Getting Yearby in some space is going to be crucial, too. That didn't happen against Florida State when he had just 15 carries for 33 yards, and it didn't happen last week against Virginia Tech either at 19 carries and 60 yards. Prior to that, Yearby didn't have a single game in which he averaged less than 6.6 yards per carry, and it would help Miami a ton to get back to that type of ground game.
TREND TO TRACK
Go back and look at it. Clemson hasn't been good on the road of late. The team has gone 1-5 ATS and 3-3 SU in its last six on the road dating back to last year, and if you want to go back even more and just want to look at how the Tigers have done against teams which ultimately went on to become bowl eligible, they're 1-6 ATS and 2-5 SU going back three years.
Miami has so badly wanted to beat Florida State, but this might be the best opportunity the team really has of claiming a big time scalp. Live bettors though, have to be bothered by the fact that "The U" hasn't beaten a Top 10 ranked team in over a decade.
