College Football ATS Picks - Fresno State at Washington Game Preview

Fresno-State-at-Washington-(Pac-12-Network)-bm

Washington is clearly the superior team and has the home field advantage so this does not figure to be a tough test. The Bulldogs were smoked by No. 1 Alabama last time out and could get blown out again as they have one of the toughest opening stretches among any team in college football.

While the outcome seems to be in little doubt, the spread will be something to watch as Fresno State may play well enough to garner a cover.

Odds Analysis

The Huskies are huge favorites and will need to really play well to cover, but the bettors aren’t scared off by the massive spread. More than 63 percent of the action is on Washington to cover in this one.

The scoring total is lower than the majority of college football games as Fresno State could have a really tough time putting up points. The “over” is currently the more common choice.

Player to Watch

Jake Browning -- Washington is ranked highly again this season in large part due to its quarterback. Browning had an impressive year in 2016 and has started this season strong. He is 39-of-56 passing for 543 yards with four touchdowns and an interception. He completed 84.6 percent of his passes against Montana and should be able to have more success against a Fresno State defense that does not have the athletes to compete.

Browning isn’t much of a rushing threat, so Fresno State’s best chance to get him off balance is to pressure him in the pocket and force him into some bad throws. If Browning has time, he should have a banner showing.

Key Stat

7. That’s the number of punt return touchdowns in the career of Washington dynamo Dante Pettis. It has tied the Pac-12 mark, and Pettis would tie the all-time NCAA mark with one more in this contest. The record is shared by Texas Tech’s Wes Welker and Oklahoma’s Antonio Perkins.

Pettis already has two punt returns for touchdowns this season. He returned one 61 yards for a score against Rutgers in the season opener and then one 67 yards for a touchdown against Montana. If Pettis can have a big day in the return game, it will give the Huskies a good chance to cover the spread.

The Bulldogs had a nice team a couple seasons ago with Derek Carr at the helm, but have since fallen back into the middle of the pack in their conference. The Huskies, meanwhile, are riding high and are trying to become a dominant program. The potential has long been there, and coach Chris Pederson has really done wonders.

The Pac-12 slate won’t be easy for the Huskies, and they hope to enter it riding high with an easy win over Fresno State in this matchup. The outcome won’t be on doubt in the second half, but the spread will be close. Take the Bulldogs to cover as it may be a bit too much to ask for Washington to dominate by this many points.

The “under” is the correct call on the scoring total as there may be some hiccups in this game for both of these teams.
