College Football ATS Picks - Oregon at Arizona State Game Preview

Oregon-at-Arizona-State-bm

The Ducks have started the season 3-0, including a win over Nebraska, and the offense is hitting on all cylinders. Arizona State, meanwhile, has lost two in a row and has serious problems on defense. Sun Devils coach Todd Graham is on the hot seat and seems assured of getting fired if he can’t get things turned around.

It will be tough in this one as ASU is a double-digit underdog despite playing at home.

Kickoff for this regular season Week 4 game is set for Saturday, September 23, 2017, at 10 p.m. ET at Sun Devil Stadium.

Oregon -14.5
Arizona State +14.5
Over/Under 75

Odds Analysis

The spread is an interesting one at more than two touchdowns, as it seems like the oddsmakers are hoping to invite some action on the Sun Devils. It is working as 57 percent of the action thus far is for Arizona State to cover this big spread at home.

The scoring total is sky high as the Ducks have the potent offense and Arizona State has a porous defense. The “over” is still the more common choice despite the high total. Oregon is -680 on the moneyline while Arizona State is listed at +495 to the pull the upset. Not surprisingly, most of the money is on the Sun Devils to pull off the upset as it would pay off handsomely.

Key Stat

609. That’s the total yards Oregon averages per game, which is an obscene amount even for the college football landscape. The Ducks average 323.7 yards per game through the air, as quarterback Justin Herbert is 60-of-83 for 897 yards with five touchdowns and two interceptions on the season.

They do even more damage on the ground, averaging an astounding 285.3 rushing yards per contest. Royce Freeman has led the way with 82 carries for 460 yards and nine touchdowns. The Sun Devils have given up similarly gaudy numbers on defense. They are allowing 505.3 yards of offense per game, 338 through the air and an additional 167.3 rushing.

It all lines up for a big game from the Ducks’ offense.

Player to Watch

N’Keal Harry - The Arizona State team doesn’t have a lot of standout players, but its sophomore wide receiver is a bright spot. Harry has 24 receptions for 266 yards and two touchdowns on the season, and really excelled last week with 13 catches for 148 yards and a score against Texas Tech.

The Sun Devils are likely going to fall behind, and will thus have to go to the air for their comeback attempt. Harry is the go-to guy in that regard a he aims to make enough big plays to keep his team within striking distance.

Free ATS Pick

It’s a little unheard of for a Pac-12 team to be this feeble defensively, but Arizona State has no answers for strong offenses. However, they have shown the ability to score some points of their own, and the home field advantage must be taken into consideration.

The oddsmakers have made the spread too high in this one. The Sun Devils should play decently in their Pac-12 opener at home. The Ducks are going to win the game, but the choice is Arizona State to cover the spread. The “under” is the choice on the scoring total as there will be a lot of points, just not as many as the oddsmakers expect.

College Football Odds: Oregon 42, Arizona State 31
