College Football is back! The first week of non-conference Big 10 Football kicks off this week with all 14 teams in action. Led by Ohio State, Penn State, Michigan and Wisconsin, the conference is again one of the toughest in the nation, in fact all four teams are ranked in the top 10 in the preseason polls. It should be a great year in the conference and I am psyched for it to begin.
The first week is filled with multiple potential blowouts, the first Thursday night league game and the showdown between the Florida Gators and Michigan Wolverines and oddsmakers have the Big 10 team favored by a field goal. Make sure to check around for the best lines at the best sportsbooks. The difference between 3 or 3.5 points is huge.
BIG 10 GAMES FOR WEEK ONE
Thursday, August 31, 2017
Ohio State Buckeyes -20 at Indiana Hoosiers +20, Total 50.5
Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana - 8:00 p.m., ET - ESPN
A Thursday night Big Ten game - the first of it’s kind! The Buckeyes have a very young team overall, but fifth year signal caller, J.T. Barrett is back and that should be enough to get Ohio State by a very improved Indiana team that has a knack of playing tough teams well at home in Bloomington. The almost three touchdown spread is a bit too high. I like the Hoosiers at home to cover the spread.
All-time series record - Ohio State leads 72-12-5 and have won the last 21 meetings.
Buffalo Bulls +26 at Minnesota Golden Gophers -26, Total 52
TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota - 7:00 p.m., ET - BTN
Buffalo is projected to win three games this year making them one of the worst teams in the nation. Folks in Minnesota are fired up with first year coach PJ Fleck and expect a lot from him. The Gophers should own the line of scrimmage against the undersized Bulls defense and run away with the game. Minnesota is favored by 26 points and will cover that at halftime. Gophers roll, 49 - 13.
Friday, September 1, 2017
Washington Huskies -27 at Rutgers Scarlet Knights +27, Total 51.5
High Point Solutions Stadium, Piscataway, New Jersey - 8:00 p.m., ET - FS1
The line in this game is one of the heaviest movers on the board. Washington opened up as a 33-point favorite and gamers have driven the line down to 27. Jerry Kill takes over as head coach of the Scarlet Knights and he can really coach, but let’s not forget, it is Rutgers and they usually are pathetic. Four touchdowns is a lot, especially on the road, but the Huskies are loaded across the board and hammer the inexperienced Big Ten squad. Washington 49 - 14.
All-time series record - Washington leads 1-0
Utah State Aggies +27.5 at Wisconsin Badgers -27.5, Total 52
Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wisconsin - 9:00 p.m., ET - ESPN
Wisconsin returns nine starters on offense, including all the big men in the trenches. They will dominate from start to finish, punishing the smaller Aggies defense and win going away. Badgers roll, 45 - 10.
All-time series record - Series tied 1-1
Saturday, September 2, 2017
Michigan Wolverines -3.5 at Florida Gators +3.5, Total 45
AT & T Stadium, Dallas, Texas - 3:30 p.m., ET - ABC
All-time series record - Michigan leads 3-0
This is a key game for both and one of the best matchups of the week. Neither team has named their starting quarterback and both teams lost a lot to the draft. It’s early in the season and both teams will have a difficult time moving the ball, making this game an UNDER. The game total is one of the lowest on the board, but don’t let that mess with your thinking. Run, run, punt, punt leads to tick-tock tick-tock on the clock. The UNDER is the play.
Wyoming Cowboys +11.5 at Iowa Hawkeyes -11.5, Total 51.5
Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, Iowa - Noon, ET - BTN
Be careful here. Iowa has the better athletes but are young on the offensive side of the ball and may be looking ahead to next week’s intra-state rival game against Iowa State. This is a trap game. Wyoming has one of the best quarterbacks in the country in Josh Allen who may be one of the first quarterbacks taken in the 2018 draft. Wyoming keeps this game close and if the Hawkeyes aren’t careful, the Cowboys could pull off the upset.
All-time series record - Iowa leads 2-0
Akron Zips +30.5 at Penn State Nittany Lions -30.5, Total 66
Beaver Stadium, University Park , PA. - Noon, ET - ABC
Shauqan Barkley will zip through the undersized Akron defense. The Heisman hopeful will have close to 200 yards and four scores as Penn State rolls, 48-13.
All-time series record - Penn State leads 5-0
Louisville Cardinals -25 at Purdue Boilermakers +25, Total 69
Ross-Ade Stadium, West Lafayette, Indiana - 7:30 p.m.,ET - FOX
Purdue could be one of the worst teams in the nation. Vegas has their win total at 2.5 and they won’t be able to keep up with the high powered Cardinals offense that will put up at least 50 points. Louisville controls the game from start to finish and thumps the Boilermakers, 56 - 20.
All-time series record - Series tied 0-1-0
Arkansas State Red Wolves +17 at Nebraska Cornhuskers -17, Total 47
Memorial Stadium, Lincoln, Nebraska - 8:00 p.m., ET - BTN
Nebraska always plays a couple of cupcakes to open the year and even though Arkansas State is a contender in the Sun Belt Conference, the Cornhuskers have too many athletes for the Red Wolves to keep up with. The total here, caught my eye. Arkansas State only returns four players on defense and Nebraska’s downfall as of late has been on the defensive side of the ball. This game total of 47 may be OVER by halftime.
All-time series record - Nebraska leads 2-0
Bowling Green Falcons +17.5 at Michigan State Spartans -17.5, Total 56.5
Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, Michigan - Noon, ET - ESPNU
Michigan State is coming off a year where they went 1 - 8 in conference play and 3 - 9 overall and missed out in the bowl season for the first time since 2006 and first time under 11th year head coach Mark Dantonio. The Falcons are a cellar dweller in the MAC Conference, which will allow the Spartans to get off to an easy victory to start the year. Sparty wins, 42 - 17.
All-time series record - Michigan State leads 2-0
Maryland Terrapins +18.5 at Texas Longhorns -18.5, Total 56
Darrell K. Royal Texas Memorial Stadium, Austin, Texas - Noon, ET - FS1
The Eyes of Texas will be on first year head coach Tom Herman as he starts his career off in Austin. It may take Herman a few years to recruit and get the kind of players he likes, but he’s a winner and will quickly turn around the Longhorns. Maryland is projected to finish near the bottom in the Big Ten East and will have their hands full but will find a way to keep the game close and cover the spread.
All-time series record - Texas leads 3-0
Nevada Wolf Pack +24 at Northwestern Wildcats -24, Total 60.5
Ryan Field, Evanston, Illinois - 3:30 p.m., ET - BTN
The total in this game opened up at 54 points and now has moved almost a touchdown up to it’s current total of 60.5. Nevada will be undersized and undermanned but will be able to put some points on the board against the very average Wildcats defense. Northwestern returns eight players on offense including quarterback Clayton Thorsen and running back Justin Jackson and will put a very crooked number on the board this week - like 55 points! Northwestern rolls, 55 - 24.
All-time series record - Series tied 1-1
Ball State Cardinals +7 at Illinois Fighting Illini -7, Total 58
Memorial Stadium, Champaign, Illinois -Noon, ET - BTN
Illinois Head Coach Lovie Smith has his hands full on turning around a pathetic program and if they can’t whip a below average Ball State club, the Illini faithful are in for a long, long year. Playing at home and with better athletes on both sides of the ball, Illinois cruises by two touchdowns.
All-time series record - Illinois leads 1-0
