Another week in the books for the Big 10 Conference and it’s shaping up well for most teams. The conference posted a 9 - 2 record for week three with only Illinois and Nebraska losing. The Cornhuskers are off to a dismal 1 -2 start and there is speculation that Mike Riley could be fired if he doesn’t turn things around quickly.

Michigan, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Iowa, Minnesota and Penn State all cruised to wins in games they were expected to win. Northwestern got back on the winning track with a rout of Bowling Green, 49 - 7. Purdue could be the surprise team in the conference. The Boilermakers, under first year head coach, Jeff Brohm, upset Missouri on the road, 35 - 3 to improve to 2 - 1. Rutgers also picked up their first win by crushing Morgan State.

Week 4 we get a taste of conference play for the first time and a huge game looms in Iowa City as the No. 4 ranked Penn State team take on the undefeated Hawkeyes. Other big games include Michigan traveling to West Lafayette to take on the upstart Purdue squad and Notre Dame taking on Michigan State. This is the last week of non-conference play. Four teams are on the bye week.

Big 10 Game of the Week

Saturday, September 23, 2017

Penn State Nittany Lions -13 at Iowa Hawkeyes +13, Total 53

Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, Iowa - 7:30p.m., ET - ABC

The Iowa faithful are fired up again this year and think they have a great team. Penn State does have a great team and will show it off this week. The Nittany Lions are solid on both sides of the ball and deep enough to wear down the under-manned Hawkeyes. This game will not be close. Penn State hammers Iowa, 35 - 14.

All-time series record: Penn State 14-12-0

Other Big 10 Games:

Saturday, September 23, 2017

Michigan Wolverines -10 at Purdue Boilermakers +10, Total 52

Ross-Ade Stadium, West Lafayette, Indiana - 4:00 p.m., ET - FOX

At the beginning of the year if you looked at this game, you would have thought that the Wolverines would be favored by four touchdowns but first year Boilermakers head coach Jeff Brohm has his team on the up and up and actually has his team believing they can win this game, especially at home. If Michigan gets off to another slow start, look out. Purdue can and will score points - the key will be whether their defense can hang in there in the fourth quarter. Purdue covers the spread.

All-time series record: Michigan 44-14-0

Notre Dame Fighting Irish -3.5 at Michigan State Spartans +3.5, Total 54

Spartan Stadium, East Lansing, Michigan - 8:00 p.m., ET - FOX

A big rivalry game between two foes that are down this year. Sparty has home field, but the Irish have the better athletes and better team. Michigan State will play it close to the vest, pounding the ball in the first half, but after they fall behind they will have to open it up and that’s where the problems begin. The Spartans don’t have enough playmakers to hang with the Irish. Notre Dame wins by double-digits and the rumors start swirling about Mark Dantonio’s job security.

All-time series record: Notre Dame 46-29-1

UNLV Rebels +39 at Ohio State Buckeyes -39, Total 63.5

Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio - Noon, ET - BTN

The Buckeyes could probably play their second string and win this game. Their offense finally kicks into gear which is trouble for the Rebels below average defense. UNLV will have trouble moving the ball on the Buckeyes top ten defense that will create at least three turnovers in this ballgame. The Buckeyes roll, 49 - 10.

Rutgers Scarlet Knights +14 at Nebraska Cornhuskers -14, Total 51

Memorial Stadium Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska - 3:30 p.m., ET - FS1

The Cornhusker faithful are getting tired of losing ballgames. If they don’t beat Rutgers this week, they will fire head coach Mike Riley. Nebraska looked bad on both sides of the ball in their loss to Northern Illinois and will have to get better if they want to beat an improved Rutgers team that is hungry for a win. Give me the Scarlet Knights and the points and take a shot with them on the money-line as well!

All-time series record: Nebraska 3-0-0

Central Florida Knights +4 at Maryland Terrapins -4, Total 65

Capital One Field, College Park, Maryland - 3:00 p.m., ET - FS1

This could be the most competitive game in the conference this week. Central Florida has plenty of athletes to play with the Terps, but in the end, home field will be the difference. This could turn into a track meet right from the start. I see 80 points scored in this game. Take the OVER.

Ga. Southern Eagles +22 at Indiana Hoosiers -22, Total 53

Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana - 3:30 p.m., ET - BTN

Georgia Southern is winless on the year. Indiana is a team with high hopes and playing good football. The Eagles will have trouble moving the ball on an improved Hoosiers defense, allowing their offense to settle in and make big plays. Indiana by four touchdowns.

Teams on a BYE week: Illinois, Wisconsin, Northwestern, Minnesota
