Week 5 of Big 10 football is in the books and another team bites the dust. Minnesota was knocked from the unbeatens by losing at home to Maryland, The Terps did it with their third string quarterback and showed why they are one of the league’s most improved teams.

In other games, Wisconsin remained flawless by slipping by Northwestern. Penn State crushed Indiana. Ohio State shut out Rutgers and Michigan State got a must needed win at home against Iowa. Mike Riley will live to coach another game as his Cornhuskers knocked off Illinois.

Looking ahead to this week, there are a couple of headline games. The battle of Michigan kicks off Saturday night in Ann Arbor when the Wolverines host the Spartans. Many experts feel that if Mark Dantonio doesn’t keep winning, that this will be his last year at the helm at Michigan State.

Other featured games include Maryland visiting Ohio State, Penn State hits the road against Northwestern and Minnesota plays Purdue in West Lafayette. Nebraska welcomes Wisconsin and Illinois travels to Iowa City to take on the Hawkeyes. It should be another exciting week, with some pivotal games that will clear up both divisions.

Big 10 Game of the Week

Saturday, October 7, 2017

Michigan State Spartans +14 at Michigan Wolverines -14, Total 40

Michigan Stadium, Ann Arbor, Michigan - 7:30 p.m., ET - ABC

This line opened up with Michigan favored by 11 and within an hour, quickly went up to 14. The Wolverines will get their revenge and in a big way. The Spartans offense is horrid, while Michigan’s has steadily improved. Jim Harbaugh remembers how it felt to lose this rivalry game and won’t let it happen at home, in fact, will run the score up this week on a weak Michigan State team. Michigan wins by 24 points!

All-time series record: Michigan 69-35-5

The rest of the Week 5 Big 10 games:

Penn State Nittany Lions -14 at Northwestern Wildcats +14, Total 54

Ryan Field, Evanston, Illinois - Noon, ET - ABC

Penn State’s Saquon Barkley is the best player in the country and proves it week after week. Last week he returned a kickoff 98 yards and also passed for a touchdown. The Heisman frontrunner has the Nittany Lions in the conversation for the best team in the country and now they hit the road to take on a solid Northwestern team that hung with Wisconsin a week ago before losing. Two touchdowns is a lot on the road against a good team. Penn State will win the game in the trenches where they have a huge advantage, but the Wildcats cover the spread.

All-time series record: Penn State 13-5-0

Maryland Terrapins +32 at Ohio State Buckeyes -32, Total 58.5

Ohio Stadium, Columbus, Ohio - 4:00 p.m., ET - FOX

Maryland upset Minnesota last week and now face the No. 10 ranked team in the country when they travel to Columbus to take on the Buckeyes. Wow, 32 points is a huge amount of points. Ohio State may be looking ahead to next week’s game at Nebraska and come out flat, allowing the Terps to put up some early points. Maryland has some speed on both sides of the ball, especially on offense, that could give Ohio State some problems. In the end, the Buckeyes will pull away, but not cover the 32-point spread. Ohio State 48 - 27.

All-time series record: Ohio State 3-0-0

Minnesota Gophers +3.5 at Purdue Boilermakers -3.5, Total 48.5

Ross-Ade Stadium, West Lafayette, Indiana - 3:30 p.m., ET - ESPN2

Maryland exposed Minnesota last week, knocking them from the unbeaten. Purdue has had two weeks to prepare for the Gophers and their plan is simple, stop the run. Purdue has an improved defense and will clamp down on the Minnesota run game, forcing them to throw, which they don’t want to do. This is the bragging rights of first year head coaches and this one is won by the home team. Purdue wallops Minnesota, 31 - 14.

All-time series record: 37-32-3

Wisconsin Badgers -13 at Nebraska Cornhuskers +13, Total 48.5

Memorial Stadium Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska - 8:00 p.m., ET - BTN

Poor, poor Nebraska nation. After years of being on top, they are now fighting for a .500 record. The Cornhuskers have one thing going for them - home field advantage. The Badgers have a great defense and an adequate offense. Nebraska will struggle on both sides of the ball and the faithful will be booing their team midway through the fourth quarter. This could be one of the last times Mike Riley coaches in Lincoln. Wisconsin rolls, 48 - 20.

All-time series record: Wisconsin 7-4-0

Illinois Fighting Illini +19 at Iowa Hawkeyes -19, Total 43.5

Kinnick Stadium, Iowa City, Iowa - Noon, ET - BTN

Illinois is just what the doctor ordered for an Iowa team that is fresh off back-to-back losses to Penn State and Michigan State. Illinois will not score more than 13 points as the Hawkeyes get back to their winning ways by crushing Illinois. Iowa wins 34 - 9.

All-time series record: Illinois 38-32-2

Charleston State Buccaneers at Indiana Hoosiers, No Total

Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana - 3:30 p.m., ET - BTN

Indiana, c’mon, schedule someone else! No line for this game. Hoosiers roll. Go Buccaneers!
