Three of the top four teams won in Week 6. Wisconsin, Ohio State and Penn State remained unbeaten in conference play, but Michigan wasn’t so lucky. Their state rival team, 59 miles away, went into the Big House and whipped Jim Harbaugh’s squad. Michigan State forced five turnovers and handed the Wolverines their first loss of the year. Harbaugh is now 1-5 against the Spartans and Ohio State and that doesn’t bode well for the folks in Ann Arbor who are not happy with their coach. Stay tuned.
Elsewhere, Purdue whipped up on Minnesota and Iowa got back on the winning track dy downing Illinois.
This week’s action features a couple big games. Ohio State visits Nebraska and could be the end for head coach Mike Riley. Buckeyes are favored by three touchdowns. Michigan State has a big road game against Minnesota who tries to get back in the win column after suffering two straight losses.
In other games, Northwestern travels to play Maryland, Indiana hosts Michigan. Wisconsin returns home to face Purdue and Illinois and Rutgers meet in a battle of the cellar-dwellers.
Big 10 Game of the Week
Saturday, October 14, 2017
Ohio State Buckeyes -24 at Nebraska Cornhuskers +24, Total 56.5
Memorial Stadium Lincoln, Lincoln, Nebraska - 7:30 p.m., ET - FS1
Nebraska football used to be elite back when they were in the Big 12 Conference, but since they joined the Big 10, they have been an average team in the middle of the pack and the once proud fan base has fallen on hard times. Now they are playing Ohio State at home and are underdogs by 24 points. That is almost unheard of, but it goes to show you how far the program has declined over the past 15 years. The Buckeyes will score at will and win by 28.
All-time series record: Ohio State 4-1-0
Other Big 10 Games for Saturday, October 14, 2017
Purdue Boilermakers +15 at Wisconsin Badgers -15, Total 52
Camp Randall Stadium, Madison, Wisconsin - 3:30 p.m., ET - BTN
I watched the Purdue game last week and they won the game against Minnesota but did not look very good in doing so. Wisconsin is a top ten team, especially on defense where they generally shut down their opponents. Playing at home, their defense will flex their muscles, force three turnovers and suffocate the Boilermakers. Wisconsin rolls to 6-0, whipping Purdue, 35 - 13.
All-time series record: Wisconsin 47-29-8
Michigan State Spartans -4 at Minnesota Gophers +4, Total 40
TCF Bank Stadium, Minneapolis, Minnesota - 8:00 p.m., ET - BTN
Two weeks ago everyone was high on Minnesota and first year head coach P.J. Fleck. He was a miracle worker, but after two straight losses to Maryland and Purdue, the Gophers look like an average team. On the other hand, Michigan State is fired up and playing Spartan football. They upset Michigan last week by playing ball control offense and forcing turnovers on defense. Both teams will play it close to the vest until the other makes a mistake. Sparty wins 21 - 17.
All-time series record: Michigan State 29-17-0
Northwestern Wildcats -3 at Maryland Terrapins +3, Total 49.5
Capital One Field, College Park, Maryland - 3:00 p.m., ET - ESPN2
I thought this total would be closer to 60, therefore, I love the OVER. Northwestern is due to score a bunch of points and Maryland has the athletes at the skilled positions to score their share as well. Wildcats win in a shootout 31 - 28.
All-time series record: First meeting
Michigan Wolverines -5.5 at Indiana Hoosiers +5.5, Total 46
Memorial Stadium, Bloomington, Indiana - Noon, ET - ABC
Wow! If Michigan doesn’t blow out Indiana, the Wolverine faithful will be calling for Jim Harbaugh’s job. After losing again to Michigan State in Ann Arbor, Michigan needs to find some athletes on offense. They continue to sputter especially at the most important position, quarterback. John O’Korn threw five int’s last week and looked horrible. It’s going to be even harder this week on the road in Bloomington. Hoosiers hang with the Wolverines and cover the spread.
All-time series record: Michigan 56-9-0
Rutgers Scarlet Knights +2.5 at Illinois Fighting Illini -2.5, Total 48.5
Memorial Stadium, Champaign, Illinois - Noon, ET - BTN
The two worst teams in the conference square off in a game that means absolutely nothing. Unless you bet on it or went to college at either place. The Scarlet Knights are off a bye week and if they have any coaching at all, they should win this game. I like Rutgers to spring the upset and get their first conference win of the year.
All-time series record: Illinois 2-1-0
