Boise State has had more success than any other school that started this century in a non-power conference not named TCU. The Broncos have dominated conference foes in the WAC and the Mountain West, at one point having a 65 game home winning streak and a 47 game home winning streak against conference opponents.
However, last season saw something previously unthinkable for the Broncos, three conference losses and a season that didn’t have a conference title game appearance. Can Boise State bounce back and again assume its status as one of the best Group of Five schools in college football?

2015 BOISE STATE BRONCOS SEASON REVIEW
The Broncos defense was the best it had been in recent years based on overall numbers, but in back-to-back home games Boise State got killed by big plays and that destroyed its chances at winning the Mountain West. The Broncos gave up over 1000 yards combined to New Mexico and Air Force in consecutive weeks and allowed back breaking big plays. New Mexico had two plays of 70 yards or more and four of 40 or more, while Air Force had three receptions of over 50 yards and two runs of 40 yards or more. The Broncos let out a lot of frustration with a 55-7 thrashing of Northern Illinois in the Poinsettia Bowl, but it was a disappointing season nonetheless.
Offensively, the Broncos were their typical selves after some hiccups early in the season with Ryan Finley under center. Brett Rypien took over as the starter in the third game and led Boise State to over 40 points per game from that point forward. Rypien was named First-Team All MWC as a true freshman and also was picked as the Freshman Player of the Year. He had solid numbers and should only get better this season.
WHAT CHANGED
Boise State will have new coordinators on both sides of the football heading into this season. OC Eliah Drinkwitz left for North Carolina State, along with Ryan Finley, and will be replaced by Zak Hill and Scott Huff as co-offensive coordinators. On the other side of the ball, DC Marcel Yates left to take a job as the defensive coordinator at Arizona and his role will be filled by former Boise State linebacker Andy Avalos.
2016 BOISE STATE BRONCOS SEASON PREVIEW
There is a lot of reason to be optimistic about Boise State in 2016. The Broncos should have one of the best offenses in the country with Brett Rypien entering his second season and he could break 4000 yards passing this year. His favorite target, Thomas Sperbeck, is back as well and with a 1000-yard season will leave as the school’s all-time leading receiver.
Rypien will also have one of the most unheralded running backs alongside him in the backfield. Jeremy McNichols racked up 1337 yards and 20 touchdowns last season behind an offensive line that had some issues. He should be the best running back in the conference outside of Donnel Pumphrey.
There are some major questions defensively for Boise State to answer with a new defensive coordinator. The entire defensive line must be replaced from last season and the four projected starters this season have one sack combined between them. The back seven should be solid, but the best teams in the conference prefer to pound the ball and that could create issues for Boise State.
Bookmakers nailed this total on the head. Boise State plays its two toughest non-conference games, Washington State and BYU, at home and doesn’t have to play San Diego State or Nevada in cross-divisional play. The season will likely come down to whether or not the Broncos can best Air Force on the road in the last week, but if they can they should break the 10-win mark and get to the MWC Title Game.
