Florida State made the College Football Playoff in its first year of existence, but failed to repeat that feat last season thanks to losses against Georgia Tech and Clemson. Instead, the Seminoles ended up with a trip to a New Year’s Six bowl, but ended up falling to Houston by two touchdowns after a poor performance from Sean Maguire.

2015 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES SEASON REVIEW
The biggest issue with Florida State last season was getting consistency out of the quarterback position. Everett Golson started the year at quarterback after coming in as a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, but he didn’t present the mobile threat that Fisher wanted and also struggled to pick up his sophisticated offense. Midway through the season, Fisher made a change and started Sean Maguire instead and Maguire played similarly. Maguire didn’t take many chances but did enough to get wins, but completely fell apart in the Peach Bowl loss to Houston.
It’s hard to overstate just how good Dalvin Cook was last season. Cook ran for 1691 yards and 19 touchdowns and was a total force of nature when he was healthy. He was slowed by an injury early in ACC play, but still managed to rack up huge numbers regardless to end up being one of the best running backs in the country. Cook has explosive speed and his four runs of 70 yards or more last season show how dangerous he is.
Defensively, the Seminoles were one of the best teams in the nation thanks to the secondary duo of Jalen Ramsey and Derwin James. Ramsey and James were great in coverage, but even better against the run relative to their position. Both established reputations as physical defensive backs and big hitters and when combined with Marquez White, formed one of the most punishing secondaries in college football.
WHAT CHANGED
Golson is gone and now the starting job is down to Maguire and Deondre Francois. Francois seems to have the edge due to his youth and mobility, but Maguire has the experience and likely will be called upon at some point this season regardless.
Jalen Ramsey was a Top Five pick in the NFL Draft and the Seminoles will be hard-pressed to replace his presence. He evolved over the course of his career from a safety to a hybrid linebacker/safety and finally to a shutdown cornerback. Many regarded him as the best athlete FSU had in the secondary since Deion Sanders and that’s extremely high praise.
2016 FLORIDA STATE SEMINOLES SEASON PREVIEW
Florida State is known for high-scoring offenses under Jimbo Fisher and 2016 should be no exception. Regardless of who starts at quarterback, the position should produce better numbers than last season and Dalvin Cook continues to be one of the best at running the ball in the country. If Jacques Patrick can become the power back that FSU expects him to, the combination of Cook and Patrick will be a lethal one feared throughout the ACC.
The defense may take a step back in the secondary without Ramsey, but the defensive line is set to be fantastic. Josh Sweat is a potential First Team All-ACC candidate and has shown very few signs of weakness after an ACL injury cost him all of his senior season of high school. Helping him out along the line will be Derrick Nnadi and DeMarcus Walker and both should ensure that Sweat doesn’t receive more than one blocker.
FSU’s out-of-conference schedule is pretty difficult in 2016. A neutral site game against Ole Miss kicks off the campaign and a road trip to South Florida follows three weeks later. The Seminoles are clearly one of the two best teams in the ACC, but the schedule, which also includes home games against Florida and Clemson, will get the best of them this season.
